New York Food Log

TBH, and perhaps being in NYC has a lot to do with it, but damn those prices are expensive !

I normally like to get out the door feeding the family (four of us) for under $60.

And that's when i'm going upscale and going all out. Normally, i can choose a place where kids eat free (most places do kids eat free one day of the week) and be out of the place for around $35. That being all said, i am in FL and perhaps the cost of living is less expensive !

FL must be ridiculously cheap or you are eating out at Applebees!

I eat out with my wife a lot and generally it is $60-80 per person for a starter, entree, wine and perhaps an aperitif or a dessert. Entrees alone are about $25-40 at a god boutique restaurant.

Of course you can eat good food at cheaper places but then it is typically some ethnic food at a strip-mall. Great food and fantastic value but zero ambience.

How does UK Bodeans compare to the NY places? I've never had Bodeans but in a pic my brother took of a mixed grill with burnt ends at the Tower Bridge one, it looked better than anything I've seen in New York pics.

When I went September last year we went to Virgils one night (one of the BBQ places posted above) and in my opinion everything I've had at Bodeans (been 3 times now) was better. Don't get my wrong Virgils was nice (portions are huge) however I preferred the taste and quality at Bodeans.

excellent, we are going to NY in november so will add some of these to the itinerary.

There are a few other threads of a similar nature within La Cuisine if you do a search that also have so great recommendations for places. Krooton's thread is the one that sticks in my memory the most but do a search and you should find some.

staying in wall street, been once before and stayed in midtown, so this time want to try out brooklyn and the surroundings down this way.

When you over in November? I'm there from the 19th for a week :)

Been looking at a few places online and ones featured in man v food as well :D

4th to the 8th
the marathon is on which we did not know about when booking the flights so the hotels were a bit more expensive.

thought food was suppose to be cheap in states although never been, looks like you paid roughly 20-25 quid just for one meal in the day !

So on average anywhere from £60-70 for food for 1 day ?

It all depends on where you go, but being NY things are generally a little bit more expensive than elsewhere.

I can't believe you went to New York and didn't try and cheesecake or pizza !?! :D

Seriously though, the food looks amazing (The Americans really know there BBQ don't they). Also what was bacon & pancakes like as I thought it might come across too sweet with the syrup? :)

I love pancakes with bacon and maple syrup, american bacon is super crispy and with the sweet, soft & fluffy pancakes topped with syrup, just makes it perfect. It works.

That's a fair question. The lobster roll was very pricey for what it was, but then again it's not something you have every day. I was planning on walking the high line and going to another lobster place (https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Resta...The_Lobster_Place-New_York_City_New_York.html) and the prices seem to be a bit cheaper. Unfortunately the weather turned the last few days I was there so I gave it a miss until I next go. Don't forget that the food market is right by grand central so you are paying for convenience. As I mentioned I was able to expense my meals but if I were taking my mrs and paying myself I'm not sure it would have been great value for money.

As for Blue Smoke there didn't seem to be as much choice as before. I've been here every year for the past 4/5 years. The first time I went we was for a work outing and ordered a bit of everything to share. As I spend a bit of time on my own I like eating at the bar watching TV etc.

What is it like in New York for eating solo? Would it be mainly a case of just heading to the bar and ordering or asking a waiter or something?

If it's a restaurant then they'll seat you, normal service as in the U.K. With a bar they'll seat you then a waiteress will come over and take your drink order, you don't walk up to the bar unless you want to eat/drink at the bar. You don't pay at a bar until you are leaving.

Hope this helps.
