Newbie First time gaming system

Don't get a nice set of gaming headphones, get a nice pair of stereo headphones and a clip on mic, much better then a lot of the pretend hype around gaming headsets, not saying there aren't good gaming headsets but for the same money dedicated stereo headphones will most likely be better built, components etc etc, just my opinion of course.

+1

I have a good pair of wireless headphones (Sennheiser RS180) and a Logitech USB desktop microphone (about £15).

Would never change this, it's great to be able to go to the kitchen and still hear what's going on, and not faff with cables.

I been using Sennheiser for years with my phone and iPod etc and even went back to the brand after using a set of Bose earphones, so I know they live upto reputation.

The only thing I'd ask from a set of headphones is that they can out-do the 5.1 of my home theatre sytstem because its great for listening to which direction sounds are coming from whilst gaming, ie. footsteps, vehicles and direction bullets are flying past.

Its nothing spectacular its a Sony DAV-IS10 i believe, with the golf ball sized speakers and is about 4-5 years old now and is full 5.1 surround sound which i have mounted on my walls and the sub woofer underneath my TV which I will be using to run the PC off aswell as the mentioned kit, but i think head phones may be the way to go, saw a set of 7.1 headphones on the homepage a moment ago but got put of by the term 'military grade' after serving 6 years in the Infantry I know all about 'military grade' equipment, and its life span ;) all jokes aside for the price of £269.99 I'm sure they will be a good bit of kit but unfortunately out of my ideal budget at the moment of around £800-900 all-in for my ideal system.

I hear a lot of hype about the Turtle Beach products, has anybody had hands on experience with these or is it just a lot of media hype about their quality?

And as mentioned I dont want other players hearing my sounds down my mic, as its very annoying for them so the possibility of headphones could be taken into consideration and expand my budget to accomodate.

I use a turtle beach x41 with my 360 and am very happy with it. I haven't used any other head phones, but the lack of wires and the quality of the surround sound in my view are excellent. The only problem for me is it gives you no notice of the batteries running out, so you have to have a spare set of rechargeables close to hand at all times. It uses the optical out on my slim 360, so it may be worth getting optical out on the motherboard you buy or getting a dedicated sound card with it.

Don't normally post in these threads, there are far more knowledgeable folks here than me...here comes the but...

but there are quite a few posts regarding issues with the Z77-D3H, including mine, which I believe a firmware upgrade can fix some peoples issues but not all...mine included, which to add I am stuck with apparently  even though the issue was there when i bought it. Its now a month old and still broken, now you may get lucky with one and I hope you do if you go this route.
Not trying to hijack your thread at all but I thought it best mentioned before we get another "help me thread"

There is another variant of this board I believe, the Z77X-D3H if I remember correctly, that does not seem to suffer the issues, however I do not know the spec/price difference.

Good luck in your build.

Just solved the xbox headset drama, £8 jobby from blockbusters. Just need some serious consideration wether to invest in headphones solely for pc use now, and if i am like i say they need to outperform the surround sound i have at present or i just simply cant justify buying them, I have never gamed using headphones before, always had 5.1 speaker systems.

Also I want to keep any accessories wired, not a big fan of wireless and changing batteries etc or them cutting out half way through a game, but I also need to consider the length of wires as it may be some distance from the pc location to where I actually sit as the logical place for the PC to go is directly under my tv unit.... which is also where the radiator is so thats a no go for the home of the pc so it may end up in the wardrobe about 6ft away from my seating position. So maybe wireless is my only option but they must be rechargeable.

All these overlooked gremlins coming out of the woodwork now after your input :)

Get a decent pair of stereo headphones and they will give you all the positional sound you need. Go to RS and you should be able to try some out.

I use my sennheiser 595's for gaming, films and music although also have a nice 5.0 speaker setup.
