Hi people

I've come here for your help , i am not amazing a computer tech so here goes , my old 9800GT died the other day so i am looking for a new FX card from ATI

Here is some info on my system
PSU 500watt

DC OUTPUT + 12V1=15a ( Yellow )
+ 12V2=18a ( Yellow/Black )
+ 5V=38a ( Red )
+ 3.3V=32a ( orange )
- 12V=0.5a (Blue )
+ 5VSB=2.5a ( Purple / Grey)

I am running a quad core 2.83gz and 4 gig of ram and a 1TB hard drive and a Creative extreme music sound card

So what i would like to know for £160 or below which card would be fine for my system my monitor max resolution is 1440x900

Hope you can help and i can persuade the mrs for a spare £160 lol

Thanks to you all in advance

Would be pushing it, 18A on one rail, 15 on the other. What brand is it? Even if it could supply those figures, it doesn't include all the other gear you are running. I'm by no means an expert, hopefully someone will chime in who knows better. I'd stick to 5770 class GPUs with that PSU.

This PSU supplies 34A on its one 12v rail

Those 5870s are bargainus at the moment :)

will i be fine with this ????

It really depends on the quality of your PSU and whether it can reliably deliver all that power on the 12V rails which it is rated to.

May I ask what the make and model of the PSU is? It should say on the label on the side of the PSU itself.

Yeah, you know you've got a spare ~£50 from the budget? Buy a new PSU, you'll do yourself a favour.

I'd suggest this one.

Just like to say thanks to all who helped me , got my new card today and a new PSU 700watt job and this FX card is ( swear mode deactivated ) amazing , ofcourse i did the usual give crysis a test and wow wow !

Good to hear the new graphics card performing well :)

May I ask which make/model 700W PSU you went for?

To be very honest with you i am not sure as i got a good friend of mine to sort it for me today as he is a wizz with stuff like this ! but at the moment its running like a dream the sapphire 5850 is superb for the cost , so many games to enjoy and not enough time lol

Cheers all

Ah, ok. Though I would just play it safe and open up the case and see what it says on the sticker on the side of the PSU.

So long as your friend knows about the importance of a quality PSU then you should be fine, but I would still check.
