Hi all!
Very new at PC building. Having a go as my son would like a gaming PC.
The issue I'm having is this, I bought a Phanteks case which is great but when I went to connect all the wires I can't connect the front panel plug as there's nowhere directly for it. It's a 9 pin plug with only 4 wires in it and the corresponding pins don't match up. Is the only option to try and find which wire is which and connect them individually without a plug? My mobo is a asus Z87-k.
Cheers.

Can you show us a pic and link the specific case you purchased?

You definitely shouldn't need to do that with a brand new case, you might want to check this thread.

I have the Corsair 4000D case and the front panel connecters are all individually labelled and they match up with the pins on the mobo.

Going by the manual for your Mobo the front panel is labelled below (taken from the manual)

The front panel connecters should match up with what is written on the cable to the motherboard and normally find "speaker" can be ignored unless the case comes with 1

What make\model case did you buy and can you post any images of the issue?

Welcome to the forums as well as I see this is your first post and just signed up today!

Thank you for the welcome! I imagine I'll be here frequently before i have this finished!!
The case is a Phanteks XT Pro ultra. I would post a pic but I can't figure out how to do that! I clicked on the picture symbol but I couldn't get to my camera roll.

Hmm, the manual isn't very helpful, it just says "power sw", but that's just 2 pins, not 4. I would guess that if you can't split the front panel connector that most of those 'pins' in the 9 pin connector are duds because the only used pins are power sw and reset sw, or maybe power sw and power LED.

Is this the right manual?

The power_sw seems to be a 4 pin connecter but the mobo only has a 2 pin connecter, Do you have a reset switch cable? As I can see it labelled in the picture at the top but when looking at the cables it does not show this.

I think they have combined the power_sw and the reset button in to 1 cable which is why it could be 4 pin instead of 2

oh i know what has happened. phanteks has built all the pins into one "easy to use" connector as nowadays the front panel io has been standardised across manufacturers (it wasn't back in 2014 when the z87-k was made)
so basically the z87-k is not compatible with this case
you will have to get a case that has separate front io connectors (which is still the majority of cases)...or upgrade that pc lol

Could they not get something like this?

For example, I have the 4000D case and if you go to the link below you can see the cables that make up the front connecter

It's the last 4 cables labelled power switch, reset switch, power LED and HDD LED.

This is what you need for your case\motherboard

Hi all. I think I have solved it as best I can. I have arranged the four pins which I have figured out are two for the power switch and two for the reset button along the one side of the plug so that it fits the motherboard. Bit of a nuisance but hopefully it will work!

Might be worth reaching out to Phanteks directly and see if they do an adaptor for older motherboards for a better solution.

Hope it works for you and you can enjoy the new case!

the power button will work but the reset button will not
I've wired up the reset button on my PC but truly cannot remember the last time I used a reset button.

I do a quick press of the power button which shuts down my PC if I am feeling lazy and can't be bothered to click start\shutdown lol

hahaha same same (my case doesn't even have a reset button lol)

mobo is quite old now, might be worth talking about this build and what games your son wants to play on it.

I tried to play Street Fighter 5 on a 1080 Ti and 5600X 6 core Ryzen at 1440p. Well lets just say the computer said no thanks

Yes it's probably quite old indeed. I started off going with older stuff I got for a few quid and have ended up buying some better stuff so will likely have to update it soon. Son will surely let me know if it isn't up to scratch!!
Many thanks all for your contributions! I have it all wired up now and will try it soon!
