Hi,

Sorry if this has been asked a million times before.

What are the advantages of getting AM2 cpu's over the older 939's?
I need to upgrade but none of the AM2 mobos have AGP interfaces and I'm loath to buy a new GFX card in my upgrade.

Cheers
Ives

tbh I'd stick with 939 if you want a quick and easy upgrade.
Very cheap to do at the moment since the new intel coreduo chips have been released.

Hi realscot,

I don't really have a budget as such.
I just want to spend as little as I can to get my ageing xp2500+ system up to scratch a bit. I don't really want to go dual core yet.

I'm really just interested in the difference between the 939 and the AM2. Is there a performance difference between the two sockets?

If your on a budget just get the cheapest of the two (check the price of motherboard/cpu/memory as a bundle). There is so little difference in performance between the 2 (slightly in favour of AM2) that you should base it on price in your case.

No,

The only thing that is different is that s939 has 939 pins and uses DDR1 and AM2 has 940 pins and uses DDR 2.

There is really nothing in performance terms that differ the two.

Interesting....

So, is it better to have DDR2 rather than DDR1?
If so, would make the AM2 interface better than 939?

DDR 2 is not getting phased out like DDR1 thats about it.

If building a new system anyway and you already dont have a s939 mobo you might aswell go conroe and get a faster system

ive just upgraded (or in the process of) to a AM2 system, you cant go wrong with either, but as i like to have newer toys ive gone for am2, mind you its worked out cheaper for me too

easyrider, you and your conroe pimping :D, any oppertunity you can ;)

Don't blame him for pimping conroe mind.
If I could sell my current rig easily for a decent sum I'd have one.

for £400 I can get something that will comfortably match my cpu/ram/mobo spec. and Exceed well past it with overclocking

Thought you had conroe?

Not really pimping TBH.

We all want the fastest system we can afford do we not?

AM2 is slower in all things.Just pointing it out ;)

Thanks for backing me up Pink!

If your rams upto it probs best buy is s939, with the sandiego 4000 for as little as £77 add a mobo too that and you got a cheap system.

If you don't have a budget and can spend abit you might aswell get a conroe tbh.

If you want to be able to keep your AGP card and Ram, then a cheap AMD 939 cpu and Asrock Dual Sata 2 motherboard would be a very cheap and worthwhile upgrade.

The motherboard supports AGP 8x and also PCI Express x16 and regular DDR so you might be able to use your current ram as well as your GFX card.
Its well worth it and cheap as chips too. :D

The Asrock Dual Sata 2 motherboard is also a good clocker too.
Well said :)

I'm guessing that with an xp2500+ you'll be needing to upgrade your ram to PC3200 too.

Yes you could save a bit of money going s939 and keeping your current RAM, but if you're thinking along those lines why not also keep the motherboard and just upgrade your 2500 to a 3200 (or an XP-M oc'ed to 3200 speeds, and always assume your motherboard will take one of those of course), saving even more money?
You need to decide how much you want to spend before choosing what to buy! If the answer's "As little as possible" then at least decide what kind of a performance increase you want so we can tell you the minimum amount for which that kind of performance increase is obtainable.
