Hi Everyone,

I'm looking at purchasing my first D-SLR and have been eyeing up the D80 after having a feel of one and reading reviews etc. However, I have one, maybe odd, question.

I want to get a filter for it (probably a UV one as I have read they seem to be a basic one used for protection) however they seem to come in different sizes.

How do I know which size I need if I were to order the D80 online and a filter at the same time? I'm looking at the D80 with the 18-70mm kit lens, however filter sizes vary from 52mm to 77mm from what I can see.

Anyone shed any light please, possibly with first hand recommendations and an explanation of why there are different sizes.

Thanks

Marco

Thanks for the quick reply. Maybe it wasn't such a bad question after all and someone else can benefit from the information.

I would never have "guessed" that amount - how are you supposed to find out?

The lens specification will give you the diameter of the filter thread, it's also printed on the lens itself.

I had to ask when I was looking for one too!

If you want fun, email Sigma about polorizers for the 12-24 lens. All you get back is a PDF taken from someone elses site that's done a bodge job to make one.

Is it printed on the Nikon though? I seem to remember my friend having a nikon and been pushed for the information regarding the filter size.

Bottom of my 18-70 reads...

DX SWM ED IF Aspeherical Ø67

I'd guess the Ø67 refers to the filter thread size. It also says 67mm on the inside of the lens cap.

What he said ^^ :)

Also, go for Hoya or B+W for great quality.

Sound advice. I believe also Marumi are a good make?
