Hey guys,

Ive just built my new gaming computer which includes the following,

Asus Rampage 2 Extreme Motherboard
ATI HD 4870 x2 GPU
Coolermaster 1000w PSU
6gb Geil Ram
I7 930 2.8ghz
Coolermaster V8 cooler (Artic Silver thermal paste)
1 Tb Samsung hard drive

I have attempted to overclock for the first time after doing some reading on the net and i can only achieve 3.2ghz max before my computer just doesnt boot up and fails overclocking in the BIOS. Ive read and seen that the I7 930 2.8 Ghz can be oveclocked well over what im achieving. Am i missing something stupid thats not allowing me to go higher than i am??? If it helps i could take a photo of my BIOS setup??

Remmember im totally new to this :D:D:D

Thanks

Ewan

Hello and welcome to the forums.

What was the memory speed, you may need to adjust the multiplier to keep it lower, ie 1600mhz or 1333mhz.

You should be able to reach 4ghz without any problem.

Less is more when overclocking for the first time...

The only settings I had to change were..

Turn off all Speedstep options (EIST, C1E etc)
Disable all options with "Spectrum"

Increase your voltage for the VCore (cpu), QPI:VTT (memory controller) and DRAM (RAM)

Also as RJC mentions, make sure the speed of the RAM (cant remember the name of the option) stays around the rated speed of your modules, as you increase the BClck to increase the speed of the cpu, the RAM speed will increase automatically - needing you to drop it down again.

Disabling SpeedStep isn't a good idea and doesn't help with overclocking but turning off C-States is (you can re-enable them once your overclock is stable to see if you have issues with it or not). Basically for a starting point I would:

- Raise BCLK (try 165 to start with, for 3.6 GHz with turbo)
- Raise VCore voltage (try 1.25 to start with)
- Raise Uncore voltage (try 1.25 to start with)
- Lower QPI to lowest setting (which is 36x I think)
- Change DRAM multiplier so that it's running as close as possible to, but not over, its rated speed.

Ok thats great, can you explain where these values are to be changed? Ive attached images of my BIOS to show you what i have? I can find the BLCK but what is the Vcore and Uncore etc. Have a look and see what i have.

Much appreciated for your time guys

Ewan

on "photo 3"

CPU Voltage is ....CPU Voltage :)
QPI/DRAM Core Voltage is your memory controller (QPI/VTT)

You might have to change CPU Voltage control to manual ? (if thats an option) not sure as I dont know this bios exactly

On "photo 4"

DRAM Bus Volatge is your RAM volts...can set that to what your ram states, usually 1.64v but see what your modules say.

Also there are 2 "spectrum" options at the bottom, general info says to disable those.

On "Photo 2"

DRAM frequency - this is showing the actual speed of the ram that changes as you change the Bclck - you will probably need to lower this to closer to your actual ram speeds...ie: its showing 1805mhz atm, if your ram is 1600mhz you will prob need to get closer to that.

Ok thats great ive now done as above and iv taking it upto 3536 MHz, Seems to work ok, CPU temperatures is around 60 deg (c) when doing a benchmark test, results i got was 295. On this site http://freestone-group.com/video-card-stability-test/benchmark-results.html there is someone with same card as me but has 621 !!!! Seems odd to me! or am i missing something?

So what do i have to look out for when overclocking? Is it temperatures that is important? Whats safe and whats not? So what i need to do now is leave it be for a while then gradually increase to whatever im looking for. Id personally be happy at 3.8 GHz i think. Whats your opinions and experiences?

Thanks Folks

Ewan

Nice to see u got the hang of it. Write down your settings as a reference of what's stable

Then try to push it higher with out making your prime temps getting over 85c
