Using newsgroups for the first time in a few years... but I seem to have downloaded a file and its passworded and wants me to do a survey:rolleyes:

Is this the state of newsgroups nowadays? Spam and fake files?

I'm using grabit.

Never had problems with usenet spam, unless I'm being naively optimistic. I've learnt from my mistakes.

The nzb site which has been in the news a lot recently has a password bot which checks for passworded archives; check the editor notes before you download.

This. The client you're using wouldn't matter with regards to the spam, its the search option you're using. And I've certainly not found anything like this.

Newsleecher checks for things like this as it starts downloading and automatically pauses/prompts you, very handy.

All depends on where you are getting your .nzb files from really. I only occasionally get stuff like this when I go off the beaten track.

Needless to say, never do the surveys, go to websites etc for a password - easier just to delete and find a non-passworded copy.
