NexFibre is building their FTTP network in my street

I went for an O2 sim for a few months until the system picked it up when they launched Volt a couple of years ago and then changed to EE and its stuck since :)
Interesting, I was thinking of trying this on a O2 monthly contract sim.

Do you claim the Volt bonus through the O2 web portal, after creating an account for the sim?

I guess it would be fine to set the Virgin connection up first, then signup for an O2 sim and claim the Volt bonus?

You can ‘double NAT’ - not sure what problems that might cause. Maybe issues connecting sometimes?

I imagine modem mode will be added at some point.

Now that a grey cab has been installed in my street, how can I check if Virgin’s FTTP network is live in my town?

According to Thinkbroadband’s FTTP map, there’s no properties live yet in my town for Nexfibre.

Could the connection going live still be months away?

What's the best way to get bill credit on a Virgin Media order for new customers?

I notice that Money Saving Expert's offer is applied automatically to the order itself (tested on a Nexfibre FTTP postcode):
https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/compare-broadband-deals/virgin-broadband/

You can get ~£80 bill credit on the M500 package at the moment.

On the other hand, I don't see bill credit being applied to orders through the main website, which is odd (or at least, not visibly).

Apparently, contract workers are doing some final testing over next the week, in my street.

Fingers crossed, that we’ll be able to put in an order soon with Virgin!

The fibre is blown to an individual property only after an order with Virgin has been made, apparently.

Maybe that will be a thing when they release a Hub v6 router, with WIFI 7? I’d guess in 2025.

More ISPs are releasing WIFI 7 routers now, but its technically still in the draft phase.

Regarding customer service, Im not expecting miracles… Hopefully won’t need to use it. Lots of queries are about WIFI quality for ISPs, which we’ll make limited use of.

The reliablity of Virgin’s network is supposed to be pretty decent, and I imagine NexFibre’s will be better.

Just another warning - no modem mode on the Virgin Media Hub 5x yet. Possibly never. The Hub 5x lacks basic features and doesn't perform well, at least for me.
Couldn’t you try a double NAT? then put the 2nd router in a DMZ?

Would that work?

Virgin could end up with a larger FTTP network even than Openreach, if they actually meet their target of replacing every DOCSIS line with a FTTP one (I think the date set was 2028).

So, perhaps it makes sense to convert their network over to wholesale (completely separate to Nexfibre), so that other ISPs can make use of their network.

At the moment, there are more DOCSIS lines ready for service, than FTTP Openreach lines.

The wait continues…

Not sure what the holdup has been. There’s still some Nexfibre work planned around my town in 2024, and some in Jan 2025, but nothing in my street. I think it’s a holdup on Virgin’s end. They are pretty slow, and don’t provide any information, like has the physical rollout on Nexfibre’s end been completed?

We tried to email a local community Virgin contact, but their technical team never called us back.

No update on the status of Nexfibre’s build in my town in their Oct 2024 report, could be that the town isn’t large enough to be included on their rollout plan.

I received an email earlier, from someone who works for my local council, and he let me know that Zzoomm would definitely not be coming to my street. So that's the bad news.

The good news, is that the reason they won't be building in my street, is that Zzoomm did a survey, and determined that Virgin Media was actively building in the street. So, they don't want to be competing with them basically. Apparently, they have finished blowing the fibre for my street.

He thinks that once the tarmacking work is complete, that this means that they will be ready to commission the lines, and that this will probably take 1-3 months (potentially more).

We had the external install done in our street (contractors employed by Virgin) a few days ago. My dad setup a concrete plinth to install the external termination box onto.

The fibre optic cable (internal) is going to run from there through an air brick, through the floorboards (a hole has been made for the fibre cable) and upto an internal connection point. I don't question it at this point lol, as long as it works.

The internal install is scheduled for tomorrow (had a text a few days ago).

We have FTTP installed via Virgin Media / Nexfibre now, here is a speed test run on the M350 package:

realspeed-test.jpg

No problems detected yet :). The engineer did a good job.

My dad had to pester Virgin over the phone to keep to the price agreed with the Virgin salesman that signed us up - £25 p/m for M350.

mlab's speed test reports some packet loss, but I suspect an issue with their servers, because no issue is reported when I use a VPN.

Geforce Now doesn't report any issues with packet loss.

The Hub's WIFI is improved compared to what we had before, with 400mbps reported on fast.com on my phone.

Does anyone know of any decent ways to check for packet loss, while downloading files or streaming data?

Cloud Flare's Internet Speed Test reports high latencies when the upload bandwidth is under load:

I imagine that this most be router / bufferbloat related?

On the plus side though, no reported packet loss.

The first time I've had perfect network performance scores for a Geforce Now session:

I saw traffic peak at around 70mbps (1080p resolution) during this session.
