Well I've done a load of thinking and have changed my mind somewhat. I've had to scale back my budget a bit down to 4K tops due to some unexpected expenses so am looking at one of These (Golf 2.0 GTI)

While this particular one will most likely be gone by the time I get paid (25th), is there anything I should keep in mind while looking at these? Will I generally be ok with a full VW history?

I know the choice is hardly imaginative and this particular model is not quite a beast on the BHP front, but I do like them, and for this particular model, fully comp insurance is very affordable.

Cheers chaps.

Becuase its a VW Golf, you dont need a good engine to sell them you just need it to say 'VW' and 'Golf GTI' on the back.

Nein.
it gets 115bhp from a 2 LITRE, plus the fact it apparently doesn't handle at all like GTI - it is nowhere near a proper GTI. You could say its a fake GTI.

Get the 1.8T (if they're availiable for this price - i'm not sure?).

One of my workmates did mention getting a 1.8T but I'd have to check a few insurance quotes tbh. :) I'm not really that bothered about having crazy amounts of power as I'm not going to be hacking it everywhere but meh... Do you say "nein" for any other reason apart from the fake GTI thing? :)

I'd been dabbling with getting a Honda Civic around 03 plate (1.6i VTEC) but not so sure anymore.

I'm not pretending to be a Golf Mk4 expert, i'm sure someone will be along with much more knowledge soon enough.

but the 1.8T is a much smoother engine (apparently), it gets a better MPG, it handles far better, and is a lot more lively.

If you get the car you posted, you'll have to deal with the running costs of a 2litre, but the performance of a 1.4.

Seriously, the 1.8T is the only MK4 to consider - even if you're not bothered about crazy power, 150ps will be a lot nicer than the 115bhp. Plus you can get the better car for the same price as the poorer car :)

only having 8 valves doesn't mean that you can't make any power. it is just a terrible engine.

Agreed its a terrible engine, but if it had the 20v (like the 1.8t) it'd develop far more PS (around 30bhp?).*

*Note: i only think this because looking at other engines, this seems to the case.

Ie. a 2.5 Volvo V70 10v develops 126bhp.

a 2.5 Volvo V70 20v develops 165bhp

I'm assuming the v70 engines be largely the same engine or is this flawed logic?

Great stuff - thanks for the opinions. The 1.8T 3 door pushes insurance up a fair bit (unsurprisingly) but I could suck it up I suppose by cutting back on one of my big nights out each month. :D

What sort of mileage would be acceptable for around £3500-£4000 outlay on a 2000/2001 one of those? I just get edgy as things go past the 100K barrier (I know this doesn't mean the engine will explode or anything, but I'm not knowledgable on the lifespan of types of engines at all).

I have to sort something out in the next month or two anyhow as there's no way I'm spending loads of money to keep what was a £500 306 on the road (needs a new Cat, maybe one shock replacing, is starting to burn a bit more oil than it normally does and going to need a few new tyres soon :()

Thanks muchly :)

Volvo are not connected to VW, so they are completley different engines

lol it was for comparison purposes only.

i was comparing a volvo v70 10v engine, with a volvo v70 20v engine to illustrate the differences the valves *may* make in bhp.

our old phase 1 306 1.8XT 8v produced 103 iirc..
not a lot from a 1.8 but then it was built in 1993 :o

Well thanks for the input anyway fellas. I'll keep my eyes open and go for the 1.8T - The insurance hit is a bit of a cow but it's good justification to stay away from nights out in the city :p
