If you look back at the release dates of the major consoles then we are usually looking at about 5 or 6 years between releases.

I always get the Playstation before anything else and you have always been able to see where the next console is going to be heading....while the PS (32bit) was out we seen the release of the N64 and Dreamcast so we knew that the Graphics could improve more and we seen this in the release of the PS2. Then once the PS2 was getting into its later years some of the games released on PC really shown that the technology had again heavily improved and we could see where the PS3 and 360 were heading.

I have to say I cant see where they can improved greatly at the moment? (besides overheating issues!, RROD etc ) Yeah we are seeing things going a bit 3D mad at the moment but im not sure thats a strong direction to head......

Do you think we could be waiting a long time before we see the likes of PS4? I can just see years left for the 360 and the PS3 at the moment! :)

Tech on the whole has kinda stood still for a while, really.
Whilst the PC industry was pumping out new hardware every year with huge performance gains and the previous gen dropping in price to relative peanuts, then Consoles were advancing quickly too.
Now? i think Sony and MS especially probably consider the cost of releasing a new machine too expensive considering the new hardware will lack the 'wow' factor that going from ex: PS2 to PS3 had.

I think sony and ms should build the next gen together. I hear people laughing at my comment but hear me. We are told that for the 1st few years the console actualy doesn't make a profit hardware wise, so it would be good buisness to havle the cost by building 1 together. There are also savings for devs by only having to develop tools for 1 system. The only stumbling block would intergration of the different online services.

I think one of the reasons for Kinect's launch was to help extend the XBox 360's life by 3 - 4 years. Looking at Steve Balmers last keynote MS's vision for XBox and XBL is that it is more of a general entertainment console, rather than a purely gaming system, which is borne out by Sky, Zune, LastFM, Facebook and in the US ESPN and NetflixHD.

I wouldnt be surprised to see further entertainment additions to the console. We have also seen 3D gaming on the 360 (COD BLOPS) which was perportedly better than the PS3 3D render. That said MS have stated it is down to developers if they want to develop 3D, MS will not be pushing it at the moment.

I don't think what your saying is laughable but I cant see this ever happening.

Sony are HUGE, MS are HUGE! the online services would not be the only stumbling block imo. A simple issue like......"right who's controller are we going with" would start a war lol. Personally it would be the PS controller for me! :D

It's a really weird position at the moment, for hardware across all platforms.

The PC has never been as cost effective as it is right now, you can build a system that surpasses the power of the 360 and PS3 for peanuts, yet in the past this was not possible, you couldn't build a cheap and powerful PC that would match or beat the equivalent consoles at the time, stuff simply cost way too much.

This is what happens when no 'next gen' is in sight, PC hardware has completely eclipsed the console hardware far quicker than any generation before to the point where a not even considered mid range graphics card (8800GT) is considerably better than what both the PS3 and 360 are capable of.

You are joking? the PS controller feels like its going to snap in my huge hands!
Has to be the 360 Controller! :p:cool:

Yeah,

Consoles have turned into entertainment hubs. I'd say Sony kicked this all off with the Sony PSX http://www.videogameconsolelibrary.com/pg00-psx.htm (This wasnt released in the western land).

Now we have the 360 and PS3 offering internet browsing, movie downloads, ect ect ect

Nintendo did it long before Sony with their various NES and SNES add-ons in Japan.

Haha ;) yeah, it would be hilarious to be in that meeting.

And yes, the original Xbox pad was great, 360 one is good too.
PS pad just gives me cramps :(

Consoles have slowed progress in quite a way when it comes to games and graphics, while hardware has kept moving, its at a slower pace and i think the lack of high end games graphics is an issue or will be sooner or later.

There are good and bad points, we get cheaper hardware that can run most games but the games aren't much better than on consoles and the consoles are kept around longer than their welcome, 5 years was reasonable and id say even a good thing but beyond this things start to stagnate, we need something else to drive hardware and force them to refresh, i don't see why the systems have to be so locked down and under their control, we could have pc like consoles with easy to run games, as always though its about money and control.

Come to think of it I think Sega (with the Mega CD) may have kicked it off.

I dont recall Nintendo releasing any other entertainment add-ons with their snes or nes for that matter!
