Next gen when?

Rumour is they're coming Q4. Get a 7950 and another when you feel it's struggling, the 7970 has been going strong for a year now.

Reputable sites say the 8970 was delayed from Q1 to Q2 to allow 79xx stocks to dry up first, ONE site, with no sources, no reputation of ever knowing this crap said its now slipped to Q4. So the guys who are frequently more accurate say Q2, and AMD's CEO said only a week or two ago that new APU's and GPU's were launching in Q2.... I'm going to go with Q2.

Nvidia... not sure, the whole Titan thing, its a bit weird to release a "Titan" which is way faster, than release a new 780gtx, that is way slower than Titan. I hadn't actually heard much of anyone say anything about Nvidia next gen cards in terms of solid release dates, so they could potentially be quite a while away.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the 8970 launch in Q2, likely early Q2 as opposed to late Q2, April would be my guess.

Not sure an awful lot of stuff is coming out that will make not waiting or the 8970 worth it, even if its to get a better deal on a 7970/50.

You can understand GPU manufacturers and retailers keeping quiet about new product launches as it will kill interest in the stock of current gen tech that they have to shift.

My money would be on April too, but few know anything for sure

TBH the 7xxx is a good set of cards, the 8xxx will only be 20% above tops and come with a massive price tag, its just not worth the wait, grap a 7xxx when its on sale and be happy!

You also get more games now!!! Theres really no reason to wait tbh.

The 7xxx series has only just come to life before xmas with them decent drivers and are getting better with each new set of drivers.

Going to be interesting to see how taxing crysis 3 really is for my 7970 at 1440p before i even possibly ever consider an upgrade. The 7970 is a beast and still going strong.

7970 I want one ;( but I'm going to wait for the new gen of cards as well. Not sure if they will be much better though than current gen.
I felt the difference between the 5 and the 6 on nvidia was a big jump though. I'm new to amd so I can't judge there

It was a big jump because totaly different chips, 7xxx-8xxx is not different just improvements.

Same with the 6xx to 7xx.

So normally we guestimate 20%+

When its a new chip overall thats when you get the big leaps forward, but that wont be until next year now.

To be honest though...I don't see AMD would leave their launch till together with Nvidia. If anything, I would see them rush their new gen cards to the shelf even if it means with half-baked drivers like this the launch of this gen

Yea let's face it...we are not gonna get the 50-80% performance increase from one gen to the next like back in the days...and if there is, both companies would charge a crazy premium for it for such a card, instead of preceiving as the norms of it is the amount of performance increase end-user should get for paying the same price as the previous gen flagship card.

Take the GeForce Titan for example...it is pretty much the sort of gain that we would expect to see moving gen back in the days, but we certainly won't see it replace GTX680's price point.

The jump from 6xxx to 7xxx is around that mark, sometimes almost double. What you are saying is partially true if you refer to the same building process, the jump will be small. At the same time, none of them gave a significant performance boost on the same node.
