Dell’s ULTRA-thin LCD concept
Posted on May 19, 2007 - Filed Under Hardware, Gadgets |

I’m usually not a hardware person, but this couldn’t pass unnoticed. At one of Dell’s meetings in San Francisco where they were launching their hybrid business strategy, the discussion was kept for a few minutes around the company’s history of developing new standards and force their integration into the market.

The latest standard they’ve been working at is what I’m going to present to you next. The Display Port. Kevin Kettler, Dell’s CTO clearly stated that this will redefine the way an LCD monitor looks like. The moment I saw this fancy piece of equipment I’ve asked myself: what does it do? I’m listing the features below.

* up to 4 times the current HDTV resolution
* allows integrated peripherals around the display
* will let you daisy chain multiple monitors which would be better than setting them up in a star toponomy
* everything will go through a single bidirectional cable

As for the best design feature it has (its thinness), the new LCD monitor will be super thin and super sleek because Dell has removed a lot of the electronic parts used for video conversion, making the equipment only half an inch thick. Kettler promised to make notebook monitors thinner as well in the future.

Curious on how the LCD looks like? Here’s a picture below. It will be available to us all by the end of this year. Price remains unavailable yet, but I’m not expecting it to be too cheap.
