Next Round of Nvidia GPU's ?

As NV are involved in so many things with those customers having high expectations I thin AMD's performance is irrelevant. The NV boss seems to enjoy blowing the market away. Look at the Titan V for example, that's not even needed but it's out there and despite it not being gaming focused, gamers are still buying. ATM I'm expecting a more optimised gaming solution based on Volta, unless the architecture simply isn't quite as good for gaming use as Pascal.

So I fully expect NV to keep pushing forward. As gaming GPU's are based on their GPU's for other products it's probably easier for NV to keep the gaming GPU's running along side on the same architecture and I truly believe they want to give gamers the best experience based on their current technology.
There are many who care little about the price too and NV knows that. If anything the lack of competition is not helping prices but I really don't think its slowing NVidia R&D down.

Just because Intel seemed to have stagnated doesn't mean other companies will too. They're not all the same. AMD have given Intel the push along for sure but AMD haven't completely blown Intel into the weeds...doing that would have proven Intel were lazy on the R&D front. Money no object the best CPU's are still Intel at the moment and I really don't think that's because they were asleep over the last 5 years waiting for the money just to roll in due to lack of competition.

I've been patiently waiting for the next round from Nvidia so I can replace my 980Ti.

They've not had serious competition from AMD for the last 4-5 years, and as has been mentioned this hasn't stopped them from releasing new products regularly. Do agree that it takes the pressure off them but the most likely result imo will only be a slightly longer delay before they bring the next product to market rather.

I'm keen to see what happens in 2018 and how Ampere shapes up.

Without looking it up I think it's been a little under 2 years for the last two architecture gaming releases, so if Ampere i happening that will put it a around APril/May time, possibly. I still think we'll something more done with Volta, possibly high-end only.

I would assume either a refresh (like 10% gain) or actual upgrade next year around the summer. It's always going to be wait and see the benchmarks/reviews and pricing to decide if its actually worth it.

Even if we do see a range of Volta gaming cards I think peoples expectations for it a little too high.

Volta does not seem to be any more efficient than Pascal on a core by core and clock by clock basis. It does seem to run proper DX12 stuff better sadly I don't think there are any games that fall into this category despite claiming to be DX12 titles.

I don't think there will be a big increase in performance from improved drivers as the Titan V has been doing the rounds at NVidia for the last 6 months. I also don't think there will be much improvement from disabling non gaming stuff like the DP and Tensor cores or releasing cards without them again I think people are expecting too much, the reason I say this is if you look at the Pascal chips they all have about the same OC speeds regardless of whether it is a 1060 or a Titan Xp.

What I do expect to see if NVidia launch Volta gaming cards is a replacement for the 1080 with the same sort of performance as the Pascal Titan Xp due to being able to pack more onto the small node. I also think we will see a replacement for the 1080 Ti with the same sort of performance as the Titan V.

The primary focus has been on the compute/datacenter type use though - I think more gains would be seen if there were a lineup of gaming cards. I highly suspect that it is basically handling gaming stuff as if Pascal by and large and not exploiting the full potential of architecture changes (some of which naturally will have an effect hence some of the gains seen) - some of which will be more significant for newer APIs.

EDIT: At the same time I'm not suggesting it will be like miraculous 50+% gains except maybe in very isolated cases.

Just noticed something I was not expecting on the Titan V

I just thought I would run Luxmark 3.1 to see how hot the cards get when overclocked to see if the DP cores produce much heat and to see if it would make much difference to performance. The cards ran at about 50C.

The weird thing is the cards run at much lower speeds when doing Luxmark 3.1 around 1642mhz was the highest they got, when they are running normal games/benchmarks they can go over 2000mhz. It is like the cards have one mode for gaming and another for compute.

The cards were definitely overclocked as the result I got was 20% higher than the stock run.

Could someone also clear up whether Luxmark uses DP or just SP compute.

If I see a replacement to 1080Ti with Titan V performance next year I'll be extremely happy - figure it'll be 1070/1080 replacement though with the Ti the year after that.
Still, I'll be happy enough if I can 1080Ti performance or slightly higher at 1080 price point next year - the same sort of increases that 1080 had over 980Ti would be really nice.

Got a Christmas bonus and I nearly pulled the trigger on a Titan Xp Star Wars Galactic Empire Edition then remembered we'll be seeing new cards in Q1/Q2, So close, Was signed in, Address filled out, Only 1 button click away from the purchase :p

Q2 would be more realistic. 2H is around the time i expect to see the ability to buy the new cards.

unless you are a massive Star Wars fan i don't really se a point of buying it over 1080ti

This^

Dice has already owned a 1080 Ti so I think would be disappointed with the 5% or 10% performance increase to be had from a Star Wars Xp.

Having said that I showed my Star Wars Xp to a serious AMD user on this forum the other day and he did like the card as he is a big SW fan !!!

Do either nV or AMD ever release in April/ May? It's normally August/ September isn't it? August to October seems to be the usual window for both vendors. At least for the first cards of a new series. They trickle the rest out month by month after that.
