Next Xbox Launching in 2013, Microsoft "Source" Tells CNET

Story was originally from Develop and has bounced all over the web with a bunch of folk attributing it to all kinds of sources.

From the original Develop article http://www.develop-online.net/news/38917/Sources-point-to-2013-launch-for-Xbox-Next

Multiple sources across the industry, from processor chip manufacturers to middleware firms, have told Develop they expect the console to be fully unveiled at E3 2013, months before its release. The collection of data points to a 2013 launch for the system across all main regions, though early 2014 remains a possibility.

Few in the games business expect Xbox Next to be in stores before the holiday side of 2013 – this Christmas and the next will likely see Microsoft marketing software for Xbox 360, Windows Phone and its Kinect motion controller.

I think you could honestly have to wait for early 2014 anywhere other than the US.

360 was released very close to US date over here, a couple of weeks I think?

22nd Nov in North America and Dec 2nd in Europe.

But don't forget they were launching a successor to a console that had only sold 24 million units compared to 100 odd million for the PS2. When the next one comes along they are going to be selling it on the back of nearer 70 million 360s*. As a result the brand is far more popular and demand is probably going to be much higher. On that basis they'll only do a WW release in a short space of time like the xbox if they have the stock.

The 360 launch on its own was wildly understocked and they were sold out everywhere except obviously in Japan.

I'd be very very surprised if they launched all regions so close together again as demand will be much higher. I wish they would always release worldwide at the same time as it just ****es people off otherwise. But to have all those units stockpiling in a warehouse somewhere is just a waste of money when they could be out in one region making you money.

* They have sold about 57million as of November I think, so an extra 11ish million for the next 2 years is not out of the question so long as games keep coming out.

Personally I'm happy with what the current generation offers, I know there are people on these boards who are getting a bit restless but I don't see why. I play on my console every day for 5 hours or more, and I still haven't grown bored. I imagine the people who complain are the people who simply want to see a bump up in the graphics department, a PC will cover those needs for them right now.

I agree with this although i can usually only manage a hour or so a day on my console.................still so many console games i need to play a new console coming out would be a nightmare for me LOL

A new console isn't going to make the games any better and it might just be me, but I'm getting sick of playing the same old crap every year. There needs to be something new or I doubt I'll even bother rushing out to pick up the next consoles.

I'm bored of Call of Duty, Assassins Creed, Gears of War, Halo etc and there is nothing in the future that I am really looking forward to either. Sure I'll still play Final Fantasy, GTA, Halo, The Elder Scrolls and so on, but I don't feel that the other games are something I must pick up on launch anymore. I think the last couple of games that I really enjoyed were Uncharted and Red dead Redemption and these titles are already 2 or more years old. I also don't like the fact that Assassins Creed has been made into a yearly title because the games are suffering as a result. Assassins Creed 1 was something fresh and new, Assassins Creed 2 made massive improvements and then it gets turned into a yearly title and the next 2 games are dull/more of the same just without the content and polish that made Assassins Creed 2 amazing.

So unless there is something new and amazing I doubt I will be buying the consoles until late in their life cycle.

I'm a bit worried about the pricing - hard disc drives have doubled in cost since a few months ago and this will surely have a knock-on effect.

HD pricing will be back to normal by Q3 next year when these things will be no doubt not even be in production yet.

2014 for the next xbox is much more likely.

looks like , for me new handheld like the ps vita is for me , seems to make more use of new technologies , and augmented reality , as you say rehashes of exsisting games are crap , thats why i decided to get rid of my gaming pc .... same crap year after year with slightly improved gfx .......

what are the chances that the consoles will have native keyboard and mouse support this time round?

having the option to play certain games with a controller and k&m for others and id probably be waving bye bye to my gaming rig.

Its a console, its main input is a joypad, because it gives you joy rather than a mouse and keyboard which is misery.

:D

tbh wait till E3 thats when they will announce or maybe a MS convention thingy they have in 2012

They could have both though. Single player could be allowed m+kb, not to mention MMOs. If they got something like WoW on the xbox with kb+m it would be huge! I wouldn't play it as i'm not into the crap but i've heard it is popular.

Obviously multiplayer needs to be a level playing field otherwise one side is getting bored being so good and the other is getting frustrated getting owned all the time. Or simply have different options in game, the console knows what device you have plugged in and will only match make you with other people with the same input device. After all, it's not like you can't already do it, just spend £100 on one of those thingys and away you go.

The way the current 360 is geared towards a multimedia center a kb+m for searching movies of tv, or youtube videos would not be an unsurprising thing for them to do. Microsoft is after all a pc software company.

I really don't want to get excited about this if it's that far away, feels like in wishing my life away! Lol :).
