Asus Striker II Formula nForce 780i (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

MB-260-AS_400.jpg

The market leading motherboard manufacturer Asus announces the first high performance boards to encompass the new Nvidia nForce 7 series chipset. The Striker II Formula hits the ground running with the top-of-the-range, blisteringly fast nForce 780i chipset, supporting all current generation Intel processors and the forthcoming 45nm "penryn" cores. If that wasn't enough this board supports three-way SLi, which means that you can run three identical Nvidia graphics cards in full PCI-Express x16 glory. The Striker II Formula is a feature packed monster.

compared to what? an older chipset with half the features?
The original striker? which was only £20 cheaper on release?
The X48 which is nearly £20 more? ;)

.. no offence mate but we all know (hopefully) that the prices are inflated... they will be much cheaper once released and other retailers have it in stock.

looking good, expensive but we'll see how things are in two months once thins have settled down with everything (the intel chipsets as well) and brands have plenty of stock and start doing some nice midrangers.

A lot of the others have said the same thing so why single me out? They are stupidly expensive (especially the Striker) and are little more than 680i with a bridge chip. 680i had problems so these may suffer from the same problems. Why spend all that money when 790i will be along soon? For what it's worth i feel the same way about the X48 and high end X38 boards.

A lot of the guys in this thread feel the same way about 780i.

So horrid looking is that Striker II and that yellow coloured Sink is obv Alu not copper, looks come 2nd wonder if it actually addresses all bugs of the 1st Striker.

Problem with the 790 is DDR3 still cost a fortune, its like nearly £400 for a good 4GB Kit.

I hate my Striker, its buggy and crap and I could return it as the 2nd GiG Lan has never worked since new 3months ago, I assumed Bios updates could fix it but they dont and they come slowly and will stop after this arrives.

I think I will read a few reviews over the coming weeks and ask Asus for one and return my Striker.

The lesser Mobo bellow it looks really nice but 1 PCI slot and not in best place for my Soundcard with a dual Slot GPU so close :)

Exactly!

Whats the point when you can get 2x2GB of DDR 2 for around £90 that runs at 1100mhz, put that along with a P35 motherboard for £120 or less or X38 for £160ish or less inc P&P.

Untill DDR3 drops heavily in price only very rich people or people that spend 7 nights a week behind there PC & dont have a social life will go for a 790 or X48 or any other expensive board that costs a mind boggling £220+, it's getting out of hand.

If your a millionaire or a manager or director with a low mortgage, no kids to feed etc go for it lol. :)

Oh not to mention the inmature bios, but then again we need guinea pigs. 3-4 months down the line, good bios & hopefully a good chunk knocked off the prices.

Will have to wait for the bench testing and feed back with these new boards. Hopefully the issues associated with the 680i have been considered, addressed with a more robust chip set incorporated in to the 780i.

I do think these 780i will demonstrate excellent performance with the new wolfdale cores, as the 680i did with dual cores. The 680i could not yeild 4 core performance.

With the 4 cores (yorkies) it could be performance yeilds better looking to the x38/48 motherboards.

The 680's are also said to overclock 1333FSB CPU crap, I can say I aint happy with mines with my E6850 GO, infact some even claim its the GO's they cant clock well.

There is rumours they may never support 45nm Quads.
