NHS Database Opt Out

But the law explicitly prohibits that from happening. how would they know who your girlfriend was in any case?

They can change the law ;)
Well in parts of the US you are asked for your girlfriends details and if you don't tell them the doc can call the cops.

And they will have your wifes details so if you have been playing away your wife is going to kill you :D

Probably my main concern.

The clause that data may be shared when in the 'public interest' has no boundaries, we do not decide what is in the public interest.
This is my main concern too. The information is private and shouldn't be shared with anyone outside the NHS without patients explicit consent. And I get the feeling in the “public interest” and “government interest” maybe interchangeable.

which can't happen as it says all personal information is removed.
This is the NHS, I don't trust them.

My father has "opted" out of the scheme twice already. They keep sending him letters asking if he wants to opt out.

by infecting machines and stealing local data they wouldn't get access to centrally stored patient records, another positive reason for them.

And what happens when a specific bot is written to target the exact servers this data is stored on, by stealing the passwords that will inevitably be stored on these local machines in the file "password.doc" ?

there are no passwords, access is only by smartcard.

I've never been ill in my life, so there's no need for me to be on the database as I've been to my doctor about 3 times in my life. So I'll be opting out, but only because there's no need for me to be on it. I suppose I'd feel differently if I had an ongoing allergy or ailment that needed to be noted - then again a lot of diabetics carry a diabetic's card on them to give paramedics quick info.

I don't particularly want a centralised database with my medical history on it - it's not for tin foil hat conspiracy type of fear, more down to the fact I don't trust them to use the data correctly.

Deuse where do you get this rubbish from.

As for DNA and organ donations, it is not that simple and does not work like that.

Where do you get your info for saying it's rubbish?

I have lived there and I know it happens also it happend to my english mate andy lucky for him his wife did not catch anything.

And while we are at it I will tell you more. If your child has a very bad cold or has got something that can be passed on
and make other people sick you have GOT TO keep your child away from school till they are better
because if they spread something and teachers or children catch it and they have to go to the docs you WILL be sued by them for cost of the doc.

Unfortunately this is not as secure as everyone thinks.
My whole life history was taken from this database and given out to someone who wanted it, money can make people do anything.

come on then link to this evidence.
We are also not America.

Also if anyone has a contagious diease it is your responsibility to keep away from others.

Oh so you know by looking at a women if they have or have not got anything?

http://www.doh.state.fl.us/Disease_ctrl/std/Forms/disease_rept_form_09.pdf

That is what the doc fills in for Florida and the person will get a copy and it's put on the data base.

"If you are a practitioner, you should report diagnosis of a sexually transmitted disease to your local county health department"

http://www.doh.state.fl.us/Disease_ctrl/std/prevent/STD_Reporting.html

And if you lived in the US and I knew your address and name I can find out anything and everything about you.

where's it say that, where's the girlfriend wife field.

For the love of god. I said in another post that the doc will ask you for your girlfriends details
and if you dont give it and the doc thinks they should know(because you are breaking the law) he will call the cops.

And as for a wife...well he already has their details and will tell them if you don't.
You got to remember you have to pay for your health there so they will do anything to keep the costs down.

Same as here(I think) if someone had aids and they knew but carried on having unsafe sex they can be done for it.

I know you said it, where's the details. you posted a standard from with nothing abnormal on it and say it's proof.

Same as here(I think) if someone had aids and they knew but carried on having unsafe sex they can be done for it.

Nothing wrong with that.

Your trying to use standard and sensible stuff to imply something untowards happening with no evidence and using as a reason to fight the system.

lets take a look at this from an NHS standpoint

Nov 2007: 25m people's child benefit details somehow missing.
database corruption. it happens
Dec 2007: 7,685 Northern Ireland drivers' details somehow missing.
again.
Dec 2007: 3m learner drivers' details lost in US - I wonder why ?
how is this relevant?
Jan 2008: 600,000 people's details lost on Navy officer's stolen laptop - Just 600,000 ?
well all our laptops are encrypted so even if you HAVE one you're not getting to the data.
June 2008: Laptops holding 20,000 patients' details stolen from hospital - Is that all ?
Again the data was ON the drive but you're not getting to it.
July 2008: MoD reveals 658 laptops stolen in four years - Just 658
so? 90% of our laptops have no data saved on them (everyone who needs to has VPN-esk connections to our network) and even they are encripted
Come on - Do you really think the data Is secure ? Do you really think the above were just genuine mistakes ?
yes and yes.
I'd like to see one example of someone getting ANY usable data off a laptop they stole from the NHS
I have received 2 letters from the government in the last 3 years saying something like...." look - We are sorry - but we lost your details - and we don't know where"
so? "we've lost a laptop but no-ones got your data because it's encripted." it's a NONE ISSUE
And I still don't know what's happened - or what they did to rectify that ?

Everything including my kids names - bank details - pics etc. Now - Imagine what they could do with my name/Address/Blood Group/Medical History etc - and possibly in the future - DNA/conditions/my whole medical history - and YES they will sell that data off..... just like they did with the Car Reg data that they said they would never sell.
tbh the insurance co's can GET your name, Address, Blood Group AND Medical History ALREADY. when you sign up YOU'RE GIVING THEM PERMISSION TO GET THIS INFO.
And they will throw it out to the public as some amazing cure all thing - stating "we can sell this data on so the medical companies know how many people are sick with X&Y"
So - what do you expect me to do ?

I expect you to be a paranoid idiot and I don't think you'll disappoint.

You can be sure the nhs will make your private information available to data mining companies that is the driving force behind a centralize database like this.

£12 billion later. I could have setup a national fiber network for the price. What do we get, some crappy IT system that makes your personal medical records available to anyone who has the money or access. How much do you want to bet i could sit in my GPs waiting area with a laptop and gain full access to everyones medical records within 30 mins.

Surely the information stored will be encrypted. The only way for people to remove the information from the system is to manually take notes?

People seem to think that hackers and viruses are going to suddenly allow people to read raw data on a centralized database?? Not a chance in hell
