NIC install problem

My onbaord networking got fried on my mobo in a storm last week so I bought a PCI NIC to replace it.

I have to admit it was a cheapie off of a certain auction site, it stated that it was Vista compatible and I checked the realtek website which also indicates 64bit compatible.

Just tried to install it and all I get is a high pitched whine as the PC boots but no display comes up at all, I'm not even sure if it is booting fully.

Any ideas at all, tried it in other slots with no luck. Mobo is a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L

Did you have a patch lead from your "new" card plugged into anything ? I'm presuming the router or whatever died along with your on board ethernet. Other than that, your Mobo is faulty or your "new" card is.
