Nice little upgrade.. 911 turbo :)

This is what terrifies me about owning a 996 turbo.

They are not cheap to run no matter what anyone says, if you buy a car which gives your 2yr of trouble free motoring, your lucky.

If a clutch fails, turbo actuator, radiators etc. which are quite common your looking at 4 figure bills, unless you can do it yourself and source the parts at trade, then you might be OK.

Engines are generally bullit proof, the NA older 996 and early 997 motors can suffer IMS but in fairness in the grand scheme of things, IMS failure is extremely rare, but bore scoring is common, but at the same time can be avoided/reduced with right care and maintenance along with pre-car purchase checks.

A 3.6l engine can be had for 6-8k fitted, still big OUCH. The 3.8s are 8-14k depending what is needed. Metzger turbo engines are 15k-30k depending on what is required and GT3 engines typically 30k+#

So though 996 Turbo's and GT3's are falling sub 30k and some look clean examples, but a clutch, gearbox, engine, turbo failure is mega money. If you got unlucky a 996 Turbo could cost you more in repairs/maintenance in 3yr of ownership than the intial cost, then add your petrol/insurance.

Yes to Cornwall - Castle Motors.....

Why do you ask...?

I have put a small deposit down, meant to be picking up next week.

do you mean without Gibbo?

I have done my homework, getting a Porsche inspection done early next week before I commit the rest....

do those that know the plymouth / east cornwall area have concerns about the dealership?

Lovely car that mate, have you had it long and have you had a chance to drive it much? I know you only posted about it this morning, but didn't know if you've had it a few days before telling everyone :D

Yes get the Porsche 111-point inspection done by Porsche before purchase, as I've known them to come up with 10k bills, my bill was a little over 2k I think, new rads, coil packs etc. Got it all done by a specialist for £900 I think it was and then got the inspection done again and purchased the warranty. :)

Once it passes the inspection, you then have to wait 3 months before Porsche will sell you a warranty which cost approx 1k a year, well worth it. Only downside no remaps or modifications of any kind are allowed.

exactly my thinking sir :) I don't want to walk into this ownership blind - My rx7 and gtr have been expensive, but I know a bad 911 is ruinously expensive potentially.

How are they bullet proof given everything engine related you've just listed out! It's these kind of stories which put me off Porsche ownership tbh.

I thought the Metzger engine had very good reliability. Certainly more so than the early 997 engines.

Any engine can let go and they do, maybe just not as much as some of the others.

But at the same time Carreras outsell Turbo's probably 10 to 1, so at the same time I would question if it really is any more reliable......

I know of at least three people with turbo who have had over 10k bills, 2 with engine failures and other with turbo issues which was a big bill. I know a few who have had scored bores and a couple with IMS failures on the Carrera's/Caymens, but at the same time Porsche sell a lot more of those than Turbo's. Of course I think the realistically the failure rates are way lower than internet scare mongering would have you believe. Still the Turbo's can throw much larger bills, likewise for GT3's, they really need a warranty.

Porsches are probably the best car I've ever driven, they have a sense of driving, feedback that no other car can really match and the way they are put together is very well, they make a BMW feel French in comparison. They are just far more mechanical in the way they feel and sound to other cars which for me is a huge bonus, as the car feels truly connected and one with the driver, I've not driven anything else which gives this feeling and it truly is wonderful.

But unfortunately Porsche do have issues with their engines, certainly the pre 2006 cars, though even the newest cars are not without issues.

Like Chris Harris said, how well will the new 3.8l GT3 engine last with its 9000rpm, a good question indeed.

In short Porsche seem to get away with murder on their engines, I mean if my engine let go on a less than 10yr old car with less than 100k miles I'd be chasing them to help with repair bill whether in warranty or not, especially as its proven that some of their engines did have inherent design flaws. They are a premium car, you'd expect the engines to last or the repair bills to be far more reasonable.

That must just be soul destroying

Naa it happens. If you buy a 911 with your eyes open you know you could get a 15 to 20k bill at some point.

I sold my old 997 last year. A few months later the engine let go and the bill to fix it was 15k + vat. The new owner is just lucky I took a warranty out a week before I sold it :D
