What's the rules, if any for minimum turn around time.
I'm finishing 0600 one day then start again at 0600the nex, giving 24hours off.
My current understanding is that this doesn't count as a rest day as I would need a further 11hours off (standard time between shifts and a full 24hours off to classify as a rest day).

Take it up with HR if you have such - can be a bit of a complicated one business to business when it comes to night work in the mix and employment laws. Ostensibly AFAIK there is no requirement to give you 24+11.

IMO no decent company would put an employee in the position you are describing but seems about par for the course these days :|

Find a new job.

Seriously, I'm not even joking. I did days / nights for two years and will never do it again. I managed it but most of the time I was tired / broken / my body clock was all over the place / and I was a dick to my wife because I was always grumpy. I've since changed jobs and am a different person. I also look at the night folks around me (security guards in particular) and often they look like dead empty husks of humans. No hope, no excitement, nothing. Just existing.

Very few people can do extended periods of night shifts and live a happy, balanced life. Then there are the freaks who enjoy it, but they're weirdos so they don't count.

OP,

What you're describing certainly doesn't count as a rest day, at least not in my book.

I currently work 4 On - 4 Off as one of those "empty human husks" of a security guards @Diddums :p , split 2 day shifts (06:00 - 18:00) followed by 2 night shifts (18:00 - 06:00) I then have my 4 days off.

The minimum turn around would surely be governed by your start time i.e. 11 hours if starting at 18:00 and 24 if starting 06:00 the following day?

Get a new job

I have done day/night shifts for 4 years in one job a decade ago

THen another 4 year stint a few years after that , I would NEVER go back to shifts again
it wrecks your body far too much

I found from having done permanent nights for 18 months, that these were the worst. I literally didn't know my arse from my elbow or which way was up come the weekend. The shift then was starting on a Monday night finishing on a Friday morning, so only 4 nights. But made worse if I was foolish enough to take Sunday night overtime, and then worse still if I did Saturday day over time  That was a long, long fortnight.

I've been doing 4 days/4 off/4 nights/4days etc... For almost a year now and it hasn't affected me that much. If it was 2 nights to 2 days though that would seriously screw me up - why do places do that evil pattern?!

As a rule I stay away from overtime as well. I can see why some of the guys at work do it (loadsofmoneh!) but the sacrifice in health (physically and socially) doesn't seem worth it to me.

Back on topic though, the 24 hours after my last night shift is counted as a rest day. It evens itself out though come the end of my day shifts. I feel for you on those ****** shifts, but that 24 hours is a rest day, some places would just try to give you 11 hours minimum.

I did permanent 12 hour night shifts for nearly 20 years. I enjoyed them but then I never slept much. On off days and nights would have killed me though. Very unhealthy lifestyle.
edit, as @Fubsy said above, 11 hours between them is not unheard of either...

Thanks guy, yeah looking into retraining.
Work requires odd hours etc (events) and I think we often fall into the exemption catagories I'm regards to most laws. So far it's a one off in a few months time but wanted an insite in to regulations. Just currently a bit bummed due to work life balance.

I used to work 8 hr shifts on the railway, not uncommon at the weekend to finish at 22.00 Sat and be back 06.00 Sun.

8 hours off. We soon decided to push for 12 hour shifts, a lot better , but not great [ no shift system ever is ].

Shouldn't have to have pushed it, it's a right. Unless you have opted out of it.

The rules now are you must have a min of 12 hours rest between shifts.

I work these shifts and they are legal, im a steel worker who does 12 hour shifts we have a 24hr gap between nights-days and this is classed as a rest day.

Worked 7 years as a RAF Police Dog Handler doing 7 nights on 3 days off, 7 nights on 4 days off

Then the next 11 years on standard Police duties working 4 on 4 off, 2 days 2 nights 4 off.

All 12hour shifts not including travel time, sometimes upto 45mins one way depending on traffic especially during tourist season in Cornwall.

Wow, no wonder RAF coppers are so miserable :p

I do 2d2n 4 off (it's really not four off though). I'm really not a fan at all. Body clock is always in ruins. It's OK when you work somewhere that allows sleeping at nights, but if you can't then nah.

2d2n or 2n2d is brutal. Why the hell do companies expect their workers to be able to manage that and stay happy/healthy?! It's like having jet lag every other shift change.

I preferred that when I was at brize tbh.

Cyprus on the other hand is a killer, 3 weeks days, 24 hrs off, 3 weeks nights for 3 months. Sort of desensitises me to people on here moaning about it I suppose.
