Any suggestions?

I'm not averse to using a permanently switched on camera so motion sensing is not a priority, but I'm thinking to get one I can use outside for wildlife once I've identified what the heck is in the loft.

And no, it's not a mouse. I'm thinking squirrel or bird, but it's not leaving any trace.

TIA.

Queen wasp or giant acorn?

It will be one of these:

I always used Reolink camera's for filming wildlife around our previous property. In our new one I have one of their doorbell camera's and it is picking up deer when they wander into our front garden.

Have you got mains power in the loft?

Quick and simple solution would be a Blink camera from Amazon - mains powered or battery operated versions available. If it goes off then you know it's picked up motion, and you'll be able to see it on your phone remotely.

There is mains available but I'd prefer a battery powered one for the flexibility. I'll give the Blink camera's a look. Cheers!

Blink are cheap and cheerful and sound perfect for your short term use case BUT you need a subscription to get some of the features if you want to continue to use it (you'll get a free trial though) You'll need the sync module to save clips if you're not watching live. Without a subscription you can plug in a USB drive to save them onto vs the cloud.

Batteries last for months with 'normal' usage. We've got one keeping an eye on the chicken coop and we don't get many alerts, I think that's probably been going for a year on the same battery.

I use the same for spying on my cats.

It integrates with my Home Assistant too.
I'll save you the lecture but check out my post in the HA thread on Web2RTC. It makes the stream from the camera real time --- the default Tapo plugin was a bit whack.
