Nightshifts

I did 3 months working nights in a wholesaler. It wouldn't have been too bad except with it being winter it meant a lack of sun light and a few weeks of interuppted sleep with the fireworks.

I'd say do it, if its a temporary gig. I'd try and stay off the caffine, I became dependant on it and its terrible.

My boy-friend has just started a new job night shift too!!

Monday afternoon 4:40 until 6:30 am
tuesday and wednesday the same hours then thursday after from 4:40 until 7:30 .
He has adjusted already and it's only been three weeks.

He works almost 14 hours per shift? That sucks.

Yeah it does and with only half hour break to, but the pay is really good and he gets the weekends off to spend time with me and our nipper :D

I work permanent nights. Monday to Friday, 2300 to 0600.

Peice of ****. I get home at 0630, get my ~8 or so hours of sleep and have the rest of the afternoon to potter around doing what I need to do.

If I need a Friday night off, I use a days annual leave.

As has been said, if I was any paler I'd be transparent, but I've always been pale so I'm not bothered.

I get cheesed off with it now and then, but I'm sure I'd get annoyed with having to get up to a damn alarm clock on a Monday morning if I was in any other job.

:)

No - it'll screw you up.

Lots of fresh fruit and water are great for nightshifts. Trust me.

Agreed.

Steering clear of fast food every night is a must too, though it can't be expected every night.

I've been working nights for over a year now and I'm looking to go back onto days as I find it messes up my weekends and I don't think it's good for relationships too.

So all the best with it mate.

I've done a couple of night shifts now (12hrs a night, 3 nights in a row) and I found I was ok until there wasn't anything to do...keep yourself busy and it shouldn't be too bad as long as you're able to sleep through the day.

Don't expect to be able to do anything during the day though.

I used to do from 10:30pm till 6:30am 7 days a week, was fine, only thing i could'nt do was get to sleep when i got in, took me at least a couple of hrs as i was wide awake still. :)

Nightshift can be pretty depressing, last summer I was doing 5-6 nights in a row and it got a bit much I found. All I ever did was work and sleep but 3 or 4 nights sounds decent, three would be perfect for me

I've done continental shifts for 11 years now.

Currently do 4 on and 4 off all 12 hours, 2x12 hour days 7am till 7pm and 2x 12 hour nights 7pm till 7 am.

I must lose a days sleep every week.

I dont get any sleep in the day before my 1st night so im knackered when i get in after my night shift and can sleep, then when i finish my 2nd night i try not to sleep all day (wake up around midday) so again, im knackered when it's time to go to bed at night.

Plays havoc with your body. :D

Worked days, noons and nights for the past 13yrs, and continental for the past 3 months.

Your body does get used to it, totally knackered during the four days your working, and its basically ... work .. sleep .. work .. sleep

But your 4 days off come around quickly :)

What does 'continental' mean?
TBH, I couldnt imagine doing something like this for years on end.. I'm only intending on doing it till september!

Relating to mainland Europe.

Continental shift refers to the way shifts usually work in Europe and usually referring to a 21 day pattern IIRC.

I've done day shifts and night shifts in a Shell garage and have adapted quite easily I've found, one day night shift, day off then a day shift. The pay is the same though at £5.20 an hour, which blows.

I have worked nights for about 1 1/2 years(8.30pm to 7am) and hated every minute of it.

If you are able to sleep through the day and have no commitments ie children then it should be ok.

The problem i had was i was coming home at 7am and then looking after my 2 year old

Do it for a short time save your money up and you'll be fine. You wont have to do it long term.

Pro plus and coffee are your friends :D

Good Luck in your new job :D

I work night shifts every 3rd week, 10-6 (sometimes 6-6) it's quite nice in the summer as it's a bit cooler (I do work a few feet away from a rather large tank of molten zinc). Been doing it for 5 years now and it's easy enough to adjust to, just avoid the coffee.

Also nice that you get afternoons to pay bills, shopping, watch countdown, the bit I like best is I can lay in if I like.

Bit of a crapper on Friday nights though, but hey saves a few quid.
