I have read this has the same sensor as the D7000 which i believe is very good, has anyone used either of these.

if i go canon I'm torn between 600D for larger body etc versus the newer 100D.

image wise which of the 3 cameras would be nice for shots of family and pets and some nature.

thankyou

Used both the D5100 and the D7000 and it does indeed have the same sensor. Personally, I'd save for longer and get the D7000 out of the two as the AF system is far superior (11 points on the D5100 vs 39 on the D7000). Its also better made with a semi magnesium alloy body.

Just to say I agree with James. Although the sensor is the same the extra focus, body ergonomics, functionality makes a big difference.

I purchased the d5100 as my first dslr after learning the ropes so to speak on a fuji s200exr bridge camera and the diffrence was good not great but the lack of controls soon anoyed me as on the bridge camera there was a button for everything . I then got the d7000 and fell in love with it ,better quality build all the buttons are easy to reach and find without looking and it takes great picture . Had a 35mm lense stuck on it since i purchased it .

On e second note i have just purchased a olympus epl5 and 20mm lense and its easy on par with the d7000 in everything . If you are not shooting fast action take a look at the olympus ,the focus is amazingly fast and the burst rate is insane for a 400 pound camera

I would second a m4/3rd camera over a dslr for general photography the size factor alone is a big advantage, an olympus em5 with the 20mm 1.7 lumix and olympus 45mm 1.8 would make a brilliant combo that would fit inside a pocket and give images at least as good as the d7000.
I have a 16 month old and trying to use/carry a dslr and chase him around is a nightmare so much so i dont take it out anymore whereas a small m4/3 camera that fits in the pocket would get used and taken out.

Thats the reason i purchased the epl5 and 20mm panny ,Fits in my pocket on my travels and as you said takes as good a picture a the dslr .

whats the difference between the EPl5 and the EM5 and would the 45mm be the one for portraits etc and the 20 mm for landscapes and what about a zoom or longer lens for capturing animals a distance away.
I'm going to the photography show on tues and hope to buy something then.
oh and how does the smaller sensors give as good an image as the nikkon bigger sensor
appreciate your help guys

ok the Em5 looks out of my price range but the pen epl5 looks good. the blue place has it with the 14-42 lens but with an offer of free 17mm.is that a good offer?

Em5 has a built in viewfinder the other one its an optional extra, 45mm for portraits etc 20mm for wider shots eg group portraits indoors or for landscapes and street stuff.
The sensors only slightly smaller it equates to a deeper dof which in reality is hardly noticable.
Other cameras to try are the lumix g5/g6 and gx7, or second hand lumix g3 is very good and very cheap also.

Look on camerapricebuster.co.uk for best uk prices. Edit lumix g5 with 14-42 lens £250 which is a bargain imho.

I would go with the epl5 ,Its an amazing camera for the price and to be honest i have not missed the viewfinder at all . With the panny 20mm it fits in your pocket .I would recommend it over a low end crop sensor dslr .

Thats the deal i got . Worth every penny mate . Go have a play with it as i did . I was stuck between the epl5 and the fuji xe-1 and the olypmpus just feels better in hand

Thanks Dan and Sniper.
I too like the look and feel(had a go with one this morning funny enough as I was looking at the nikkon and I did love the size and look and feel.
I shall see if at the show on Tuesday there are any offers if not will still buy one from there.im attracted by the white one .
Glad you posted and turned me at the last minute ;)

I was going to go for the fuji but after having a play in shop i decided on the Olympus as it felt better made and smaller . was very happy with the choice i made ,both cameras take exellent pictures . I would say the olympus but best to go along and have a play first .

I would take a D7000 over an m43 camera , there is just no contest in overall performance. I love my little epm2 but it is just not even close to my D90, let along much newer DSLRs. There is a big difference in ergonomics, responsiveness, continuous focus and tracking, proper optical viewfinder, lens availability, battery life and with the D7000 and newer image quality (although my epm2 is very similar to my D90 IQ wise, newer Nikon/Pentax/Sony DSLR are well ahead).

m43 system work as a great addition to a DSLR IMO. The higher end m43 camera do compete with DSLR for overall functionality, but at a very high cost and still with limitations in continuous focus tracking. The lower end cameras make excellent P&S replacements, e.g. they are far better cameras than the likes of the Sony RX100 for less money and much better sensor and lenses. For general photogrpahy or when you need something very light they are superb, when you start wanting more performance then they start to get limiting fast (the higher end models can be pushed further but at a high cost and a D700/D71000 would ill be well ahead).

I would disagree . The olympus epl5 is a better choice than an entry level crop sensor camera. If you not fast action like sports then its a no brainer really . Lotts of pros say the same .
