Right looking at getting a camera for the missus, just something easy to use and having seen one of these nikon 1 J2 cameras, i was thinking of getting one for her as it seems pretty easy to use?? ie just pick up and shoot??

Anyone have one or used one??. If so whats its like?? is it an easy camera to pick up and shoot without having to fiddle around with various settings??.

Unless someone has any better suggestions??. Budget is about £300 max.

The Nikon 1 camera area really nice little cameras, the autofocus behaves much more like a DsLR and that puts it into a class of its own. It is also very speed and responsive which is nice. The sensor s design is very good so it keeps up with larger sensor cameras. The Nikon f-mount adapter does a much better job of allow Nikon f mount lenses to focus than other cameras like the Sony Nex and its alpha mount adapter.

The J1/2 is very beginner orientated.

Origionally I was very keen on picking up a Nikon v1 but I have not been I pressed with th rate of lens releases, this won't be an issue for a begginer. The microfour thirds cameras also had very old and underperforming sensors but now they have a newer high performing sensor so they are making me more interested than the Nikon 1.

Have a look to see if the older J1 model is available at discount, there is very little difference between j1 and j2

Bought my missus the J1 last year and she loves it! Dropped it on day two but being metal body was fine, Very easy to use just turn on and go. It has a mode that takes a few pics at once and then selects the best 5 for you so you never miss that moment.

Point and shoot at it best, Im still really impressed by how fast this cameras is, autofocus is quick, tracks faces so always sharp where it needs to be.

I found it tricky to get really creative with one as you have to use menus to get access to manual features but my wife wanted a step up from compacts which it offers and produces great images with DSLR like results.

My mrs has a pink Nikon J1 and its a great piece of kit. The only thing I don't like about it is that if you want to change the ISO, you need to go into the menu to do it, otherwise use auto ISO. The auto is fine, but it goes to levels I personally wouldn't on such a camera with 800 and 3200 being the main two options for auto, with the former being the better option for file clarity.

The autofocus system is really good and the minimum focus distance with the kit lens (10-30mm) is absolutely tiny, allowing almost macro style shots to be taken with it. Due to the size of the sensor, you must get very close to things to see a nice bokeh background, which is the only real downside of the sensor tbh.

The FT1 mount adapter, whilst a good idea, isn't necessarily a good idea for everyone, as it vastly reduces the portability and ergonomics of the camera from something that fits in a small bag to something that needs a far larger bag and weighs far more.

There are some interesting lenses coming out though with the 18.5mm F1.8 being the one I've been paying close attention to due to the crop factor being x2.7 that makes it nearly 50mm compared to FX, which is a rather nice focal length to take shots at.

Cheers lads, think im going to pick one up for her as she wants someting that is nice and easy to use without having to faff around with settings.

Just need to find one at a good price now.
