I am selling my d300 and big lens and hoping to get something lighter to carry. I have narrowed it down to the following Nikon 5300 vs 7100 vs canon 700d vs 70d . I like to take action / sports shots. I would like people's option on which one you think is best :)

If you want something lighter have you considered going mirror-less?

Something like a Olympus/Panasonic m43 system or Nikon 1 will give you much smaller bodies and lenses.

You would love the D7100 but it is hardly any smaller than a D300, just much better IQ. The D5300 is smaller but you wouldn't like the lack of features/ergonomics/controls. You will find something similar on the 2 canon bodies.

the only way to get your lenses smaller is to get slower aperture glass or get a smaller sensor - hence the mirror-less suggestions.

The d7100 weights less that the d300 and I intend to do get a compact zoom to replace the 70-200 f2.8 ( which I love but has to go). Had a samsung mirror less but did not like it , sold it and got a canon g16 as a every day carry around. I think you are right about the d5300 :)

What about the Pentax K5, K50, K30,

All are heavier than the D5300 but smaller. They are lighter than the D7100.

Pentax has a lot of small prime and pancake lenses that help to reduce weight too.
