Nikon announce D500 flagship dx

Looks very nice...

An AF module developed for full-frame means unprecedented frame coverage on the APS-C D500, in this case with cross-type sensors available out to the literal edges of the frame. Furthermore, Nikon is introducing Auto AF Fine-Tune, which appears to use Live View (focus at the image plane) to automatically calibrate (at least the center point of) the Phase Detect AF module for any given lens 'with a few button operations'

I think with those specs Nikon finally has a rival for the Canon 7D Mk II for sports, wildlife and bird photographers etc... in fact the specs are significantly better, which is to be expected at this stage.

I imagine this will sell very well when the price settles.

Very interesting indeed. Looks like this will be a beast for DX.

Do we know anything on any new FX cameras from Nikon? I'm about to get a D750, but would hold of if they had another FX camera coming out in the near future, which may push down the cost of the D750.

Not for a while I'd say... other than the non-mainstream consumer D5 of course.

Tye fabled D400 comes to light! Lots of.doubters but I knew it would come. Very tempting for wildlife

Will be very interesting to see the low light performance on this vs the D750, as imo this actually makes a compelling alternative unless you specifically need full frame, given the features and imo reasonable price point.

I really think that Nikon needs a consumer FX DSLR with a higher fps and buffer to match, as currently the D750 annoys in that department, not to mention the 1/4000 shutter speed limit which has been an issue for me a few times.

I'm such a consumerist. I've only had my D7200 since May and I already want this D500. Looks like a great piece of kit.

Me too, looks like an amazing piece of kit! Ahh, maybe I'll wait a year or so for it to come down a little, as next year I plan on doing a Safari and I imagine this camera will be epic for that. :D

I think it would be a huge upgrade over the D7200 though, so go for it and enjoy the best of the best for a couple of years! :)

I'd love to but I think some lenses are needed first. Need more reach than my Nikon 55-300mm for aviation, so naturally the Sigma 150-600mm is on the wish list. I've also only got a 35mm f/1.8 at the wide end, so I need to get a kit lens replacement, so - again - naturally the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 is on the cards.

I'm just waiting to see if anything comes out of CES but I don't think Sigma are there so maybe I'll just go for it. What else are credit cards for? :p :D

It's called a D5, and no, Nikon won't make an identical D5 and sell it for $2k. They did that with the D700 and lost a lot of D3 sales.

Your anal retentiveness never ceases to amuse me. It doesn't have to be "identical" to the D5 (seriously DP, get over yourself you condescending twit :)), but a higher fps certainly wouldn't go amiss, and at the moment the D810 has a great buffer but low fps, and the D750 has acceptable fps but no tangible buffer. I (and many other users from what I read) would like a happy medium of 7-8fps and a decent buffer with the D750 or preferably tweaked D810 sensor.

Tamron 150-600 is very good... also are you aware of the aperture weirdness on the Sigma, esp if you were considering the sport version.

Then buy the D4s second hand. If you want a high FPS, Large buffer FF camera then that is exactly what the D4/D5 is aimed at.

I would also question why you think the 7-8FPS is needed, very niche market for pro sports. The D810 does 7FPS in DX moDec around 6FPS in 1.2x crop and at least 5FPS FF. Most people couldn't really tell 5FPS vs 7FPS, much more important is things like focus tracking during Continuous shooting.

I've never had an issue with 4FPS for birds in flight or children playing.
