Nikon Coolpix S8000

Well earlier today, my mom bought the Coolpix S8000 due to its 14mp and 10x Zoom.
I played around with the settings and I'm not satisfied with it, bare in mind I'm not a pro and don't know what ISO/Matrix/etc means in the menu

I thought the 14mp would produce great quality, but our 3 year old Samsung S850 with 8mp and 5x zoom seems to be on par.

Could anyone who has the S8000 provide some tips, if I'm still not satisfied I might get her to return it.
If we end up returning it, could someone recommend a slim/compact/portable camera with good image quality and "some" of the blings for around £150, preferably from Argos as this is where she got the camera.

just because its 14mp doesn't mean it will be good
to many camera manufacturers just keep upping the MP because most people just look at that when buying a new cam.

some manufacturers like panasonic and canon have gone back down in MP(14mp down to 12mp) for some of there new cam`s to get better picture quality

mostly the graininess of the picture and the focus

they do the panasonic tz5 for £159
i have the tz6 as my back up cam if the weather crap and i dont want to take my bigger cam and its a good little cam with 12x opzoom

ok well, we were at a christening today and so i had to use the camera to take some pics, does this mean i can't return it now?
well if thats the case, i might aswell keep it as my mom seems to be happy and impressed by it.

so can anyone just explain these terms for me so.

ISO- is it better to set it to high/low/auto?
metering- what does this do?
focus- full time? face/auto/center/manual?

ps. i cant seem to find the TZ5 on their website, but they have the TZ8 for £155

opps sorry it was ment to be the tz8 lol
if the cam looks un maked and you delete everything returning it will be fine
argos are fine with most returns i have found
