Nikon D lenses nicer to use than G series?

I've recently noticed how much nicer the D series focusing rings handle and how much more solid the build of the lens feels compared with the G series which seems plasticy and cheap in comparison. Does anyone else feel the same way? Seems like a step backwards in some respects.

Depends what price range you look at. I'd agree with you when you look at the cheap lenses such as the 50mm f1.4/1.8G. However then more expensive primes and professional zooms are far more solid with mostly metal construction. The newer lenses also suffer less glare and often have better bokeh due to rounded aperture blades.

Nikon G lenses aren't a series in the same way as Canon L lenses, it literally just means that the lens doesn't have an aperture ring. For the money the D lenses will be slightly better built but the high end modern Nikon lenses are built just as well. It's just because they're older and therefore cheaper so the 85 1.4D starts competing with the 85 1.8G etc.

The new Nikon lenses are great performers optically for the most part and built just as well, but yes if you can't afford the highest end stuff the old guard of AF-D lenses are all still lovely bits of kit; the 1.8G primes will just outperform them in a lot of areas outside of that build quality though.
