Nikon D50 problem

I have been using my d50 for around a month now with no problems. Although yesterday when taking a shot, it focused okay then when i pushed fully to take the shot the camera froze and turned its self off. The only way to get it back on was to take the battery out and put it back in again. Then on the top LCD pannel it showed the message "Err". In the manual it says "Err is a camera malfunction. Release shutter. If error persists or appears frequently consult with nikon-authorized service representitive." So i released the shutter and was okay for around 20-30 shots then it happened again. Although today its happening on every shot. Ive reset the camera, changed memory card / battery, re-seated the lens, but nothing seems to help. A web search showed a lot of results but nothing with a fix. Anyone come across this problem before, or am i going to have to put it in for repair?

sounds like you've done everything I was going to suggest. When you release the shutter does it move ?

Might be worth taking the lens of and with a blower just blowing in around the hub part, something might be in there that shouldnt be !

When i release the shutter it does not move. To get the mirror back down i have to take the battery out , put it back in , then push the shutter release button again. Ive also cleaned around the hub part and cannot see anything that is there that shouldnt be.

I bought the camera off of ebay around 1 month ago, and the camera is more than 1 year old, so ive no warranty. From what ive been reading online a new mirror box may be needed. Which could cost a small fortune in parts / labour.
