So going to France in 3 weeks and need an extra battery to go with my d5100, I would like to buy the original ones but they seems extortionate compared to the after market ones which goes around half the price. I have however read that the after markets not working properly after the first couple of times. Should I muster up the cash and just get the en el 14?

There are some times cheaping out isn't worth it. Ok, in photography there are hardly ever times when cheaping out helps in any way, as I have discovered.

Have a look at third party sellers on amazon. I picked up 2nd hand genuine battery for my a65 and works like a charm.

Otherwise, try Google shopping search

...Still on Nikon original batteries in my D90. Bought 4 years ago now and can still take 1800 pictures with 40% left.

Personally wouldn't bother with 3rd party ones.

Update. Got one from amazon but didn't go for the original just got one that got lots of good reviews for £13 and used the rest for a better strap than the original nikon one. Hopefully the battery works ok i don't expect it to outperform the original but I hope it's decent enough as a backup.

I had a cheap 3rd party battery explode in my camera, luckily not damaging the camera but that meant that I could no longer take any photos for 2 weeks of my 4 week holiday in the US. Since then I have purchased 5 or 6 genuine Nikon batteries which have all been flawless - until I lost them in Canada a few years back! I had a big trip planned again to the US and needed batteries to last 5 weeks , I ended up buying a variety of 3rd party batteries but all from fairly reputable battery manufacturers (energize etc.). They are a bit mixed, some hold more charge than the Nikon, most hold way less. 1 has died (well, only gives like 50 photos) but the rest are OK but seem to have degraded worse than the genuine Nikon.

So I still think you get what you pay for really, but the price difference is so huge that you can afford for a several 3rd party batteries to fail and still be quids in. The danger just comes from an exploding battery ruining your camera!

Got the delivery now it's the maxsima branded one and it came fully charged. So far it works after a couple turn off and on but I I will test it thoroughly before the trip. The exploding story is a bit scary though lol.
