As expected in all regards really 16.2 MP, tilty screen, massive ISO range and fancy extension to 102400.

~£670 body only, ~£780 with 18-55 VR

My take is it's a very decent spec without anything massively new and a shade pricey at the moment (though it'll come down tp <£600 body only fairly quickly I imagine.

Nice camera though.

Thoughts?

It's pretty much to the D7000 as the D5000 was to the D90 so, as you say, few surprises. It does get the same screen as the D7000 which is definitely good. I think the reduced height is going to make it look damn silly with, say, a Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4 on the front and it looks like it might be less comfortable to hold than the D5000 but would have to try one to confirm. Other than that, it looks like a good choice for anyone for whom the D7000 is overkill.

What camera in Canon's line up is it in competition with? 600d? I'm thinking of trying out a dslr for the first time and was considering an eos 550d, eos 600d or nikon d90. Where about would this new d5100 fit in amongst those? So many models, so confusing...

my take on the Nikon/Canon lineup is

D3100 vs 1100D
D5100 vs 600D
D7000 vs 60D
D300S vs 7D
D700 vs 5DM2
D3 vs 1D

Some may disagree but thats just my opinion

My take is there isn't necessarily direct equivilency as the market has become sufficiently complex that Nikon and Canon aim at different segments.

The D700 and 5DII are similar only in being the cheapest full frame camera's in the respective range, they're wildly different in suitability for various jobs and the like. Likewise the D7000 punches well above the 60D and well below the 7D (imaging wise, video just complicates this further).

If you are looking at a 600D the D90 is lower spec but better built (and will likely be killed off soon), the new D5100 is roughly spec and build equivilent to the 600D and the D3100 is cheaper and lower end.

Basically forget about what's equivalent, buy the camera that best does what you want for your budget., they all have pro's and con's unfortunately, even if you spend £5k there's no perfect camera...

Hmm now a dilemma then, as I was going to get the d7000 in a month or two, suppose I will still go to the d7000 lest I get the itch to upgrade from the d5100. On a refurbed D3000 at the moment.

Who cares about these toy cameras, GIMME THE D4!!! :D

But seriously, I was expecting the announcement to contain at least some reference to the high end range. In my opinion, the D300s, the D700 and D3x all need to be updated. I think that Canon's 7D, 5DmkII 1DmkIV have the edge on Nikon at the moment, with only the D3s offering a viable alternative to the 1DmkIV. Having said that, I suppose there's no sign of the 1DSmkIV yet either.

After 40,000 pictures, my D300 has developed an intermittent hot pixel :(

They do need to come soon, the D300 is particularly aged now and doesn't even hold it's own against the D7000. The 5DII / D700 comparison is far more difficult, they're basically completely different beasts for different purposes - if you need the D700's AF then the 5DII doesn't cut it in comparison but then if you need video...

I'd argue the D3x and D3s are still the best professional bodies going though, given unlimited funds for body and glass I'd choose them over the Canons.

Of course all the fancy gear gets made in Japan, as opposed to stuff like this which gets made elsewhere for cheap. Hence I imagine the D4 / D800 release have been pushed back a bit as a result to recent events. There's also the view the D4 will be really high spec as Nikon tend to do big major revisions in pro bodies, remember the D2xs to D3 change? And the tech isn't quite there for a repeat of that yet. If it was released today what would a D4 be except a D3xs (that is, 24MP FX, 10fps, D3s ISO performance) with a different label? I think the D4 will be more than that evoutionary change...

Anyway, this is for the D5100, middle of the road consumer camera that it is...

A 24MP camera with the D3s's ISO performance would be pretty revolutionary if you ask me!

The D5100 is a perfectly fine camera, it is definitely only evolutionary but tbh it fixes most of my qualms with the D5000 for what it is. It's meant to go against the 600D and it does that just fine imo, with the screen now up to scratch and a higher res (and much better low-light) sensor

Hey guys been wanting to get D90 for past few weeks but I though I would wait until the D5100 is released would you say other than build quality the D5100 is better buy than D90?
This will be my DSLR not really bothered about about video, just want non entry lvl DSRL so I learn the features and have a few pro functions/manual.

Thanks
