Very nice but price is a bit too high to make me part with my D300, especially when I'd then convince myself I needed to buy new lenses to make the most of the full frame sensor :D

Sweet. Can't begin to think about upgrading my D200 yet, but hopefully the SB-900 means SB-800 prices will drop a bit - I have to give mine back to the department next month :(

Also, the 85mm tilt-shift sounds very interesting indeed.

Looks like it's going to cost £2000, which is a fair whack more than the D300 - seems a lot for a ff sensor if you ask me.

Yummy indeed. A few features that look good; The CF door is like the SD door on the D40. I never really liked the seperate lever on the D300. Anyone know what the 'info' button is? I presume its the same as if you press up or down on the selector pad on the D300? A decent round viewfinder cup, with a bigger viewfinder. A viewfinder curtain! More customisable buttons. Uses the same grip as the D300 and same battery as the D300 and D3. Sensor cleaning (Not sure how good it is mind.) Oh, and the SAME sensor as the D3. All at a rrp of $2600. Good work Nikon, good work indeed. :)

Hear hear. I WAS going to be ordering a D300 in the next week or two, I've changed my mind now and will hold off until this becomes available. :)

The D300 is still more than capable. The choice of which one to go for really depends on what you shoot. I certainly wouldn't say no to a D700, but as I mainly shoot wildlife, the D300 makes much more sense. If the D700 noise handling is as good as the D3 (And there's no reason it shouldn't be) then its damn tempting.

Yeah, you'll get better results with longer lenses on the D300 than you will on the D700 or D3, since it has a higher photo site density. The D700 will allow you to make full use of FX wide angle lenses like the Nikon 14-24mm though

I really want one and I'm a canon man.

Nikon have done well here, solid leaked generated loads of good hype and then the camera delivered very soon after the D3 and D300 have rocked canon sales. Canon on the other hand sit on their hands for 3 years (probably just going for 'The Stranger' technique) denying that the 5D even needs updating and we may or may not get some kind of upgrade perhaps / maybe / possibly in september at photokina.

Canon really need to release some sort of tempting titbit of info or more concrete hint of spec for the 5D replacement(s) or they are going to lose a lot of customers who are fed up of waiting for the 5D replacement... i.e. me :p

I mainly use the Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 - would you still advise sticking with a D300?

I saw the specs for the D700 quoted something daft like 5MP when shooting with a DX lens?

Depends on what end of the 70-200 you use most. Remember with the D300, the fov of the 70-200 is the equivalent of a 105-300mm. Put the 70-200mm on a full frame and you have a 70-200. so if you shoot on the long end and crave for more, then stick with the D300. If you however shoot mostly on the wide or middle range of the lens, then by all means go for it.

One thing you might also want to consider is that the covering power of the 70-200mm isn't quite as great as it should be. Ie you get light loss and softness at the extreme corners on a full frame. How bad this is, im not sure but i recon its exaggerated. As for 5mp on a DX, yup, but remember that unless you print out large, 5mp is more than enough for good shots.
