I know there's been a few threads on here recently about the 550d. Now at present I have the Nikon d90 with 35 and 50mm primes.

I was bored out xmas shopping and checked out the 550d in a shop and was blown away by how light it was. I know that's usually a criticism of a DSLR, but I actually prefer a nice light body that's less of a burden to carry around. Great bright back LCD as well and well laid out menus. Kit lens was pretty rough though to be honest.

This has got me to thinking - would I be mad to sell my d90 and lenses to get the 550d? I was thinking of getting a body only deal and invest in the 50mm 1.4 Canon lens, and some better glass at a much later date (there does seem to be much more choice of Canon lenses on the 2nd hand market). I mainly like street photography and portraits. How's the high ISO performance of the 550d compare with the D90?

Shall I do it?

Edit: If so I'll sell my GF1 to help pay for the migration, with the lighter DSLR body I'd be keener to carry it around more rather than keep switching to the GF1.

Canon 550d (incl. battery) 530g
Nikon D90 (incl. battery) 703g
Nikon D700 (incl. battery) 1085g

Conclusion: demo a pro body, then realise how light and great your D90 is. Maybe buy a better bag :p

I can't say that I ever understand the weight thing with a camera body, but then again I do carry plenty of extra weight already! "Cough, fatty, cough" :D

If that's important to you though, it may be only 170g but it is also nearly a third increase in weight. My old 500D with the nifty fifty was very light weight. How does the D3100 stack up weight wise?

Edit: D3100 is 505g with battery, worth a look at if you're already used to Nikon?

Sadly the rear LCD is the same as the 3000 I used to have. It's not as good as either the D90 or the 550d though.

I'll have a think over Xmas and check out some flickr pic examples. Thanks for replies so far though.

170grams?!? lol! Man up kiddo! ;-)

Edit; there must be more than weight driving this?

Possibly could be a symptom of wanting to try Canon for a change.

All my friends are Nikon users, and when it came time to get a DSLR I naturally gravitated to Nikon without trying the opposition. Sadly my friends all keep lenses for years, so I don't appear to have decent access to 2nd hand Nikon lenses.

I love my D300s and the heft of it but I may have a differing opinion come the end of my India trip. I thought the D80 was about perfect weight wise... It didn't feel like a toy like some of the smaller Nikons and Canons do...

but 550D is class lower to D90.... why would you change your camera to something worse ?

Because I was thinking flogging the D90 + 2 lenses and a GF1 + pancake lens wouldn't quite bag me enough for a 60D and the 50mm 1.8 even.
