Hi all,

First time poster in the photography section.

Me and the other half are off to the USA soon and will be visiting New York, Washington and Miami. I'm thinking of purchasing an UWA or a fisheye lens to try and add a bit more flair to the photos I'll be taking of the city.
I also take a lot of landscape shots while touring on the motorbike (think Alpine landscapes, lakes etc) which I think would benefit from one of these lenses.

My camera is a Nikon D3200 and I currently have an 18-270mm zoom lens and a 35mm that see a fair bit of use. Unfortunately, the zoom lens has quite a lot of distortion down at 18mm.
To try and keep the cost as low as possible I'd probably be looking at a used lens from a photography dealer.

What would people recommend looking at and what kind of budget would I likely need to make a worthwhile investment?

Auto focus and semi-auto modes are a must have for me.

Tokina make a few wide angle zooms.
11-16 2.8 is popular. The oldest ones won't work with your camera as they don't have a motor. I wouldn't pay much extra for VR on a wide lens.

The new Sigma lenses are pretty good but expensive.

I'm happy with the new nikon 16-80, but it's not great for distortion, but it's fine once corrected (I don't take architectural pictures often)

Thanks, the Tokina lenses seem to be much better priced than the Nikon and Sigma equivalents and the reviews look good. Definitely something to consider.

I'm really struggling with choosing between the wide angle and fisheye lenses. I love the fisheye effects on landscape and architectural shots (most of my photography) but the wide angle will be much more useful day to day and for portraiture!

Fisheye always seems a bit gimmicky to me — there are some shots where it does add something but most of the time it just looks too unnatural.

For a record of a trip, especially visiting such varied places in the USA, I'd definitely be looking for a 'normal' lens.

Another vote for the Tokina based on your requirements — the 11–20mm f2.8 replaced the 11–16mm f2.8 II so either grab that for the latest lens or see if you can get a bargain with the 11–16mm f2.8 II.

theres probably some sigma f4-5.6 10 to 20mm on second hand market, slower but wider and itll take 77mm filters and/or cokin p, rectulinar ultra wide, not fisheye

you can buy okish fisheye lenses for phones, very cheap and 235 degree ones are bit crazy :)
