Nikon launches the entry level D3200.......with a 24MP sensor!!

I was looking at the D5100 vs the D3200 and ended up getting the D5100 because it appeared to be better at low light.

It's a complicated subject, the pixel level noise will always look worse on a higher MP sensor, but the image noise should not be worse (by any appreciable margin).

All that means is, if you took the same shot on a D5100 and a D3200 and displayed at any size (as long as it's the same), no matter what ISO, the results should look pretty much the same..

The flipside is that at lower ISO, you will resolve more detail from the 24MP sensor..

Here is the DPReview studio comparison tool to have a look,
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/stu...cr&x=-0.3678963110667996&y=1.3821672736566355

If you download the RAW converted JPEGs and upscale the D5100 to the same size as the D3200, you will see the noise levels when viewed like for like are actually very good on the D3200 and it does seem to retain more detail (probably due to newer generation sensor).

The thing is, I probably wouldn't be that bothered with any difference in 'sensor', it's more the actual camera features that I find important, the D5100 (my last camera) was excellent for the money, so you won't be disappointed either way..

I've actually got a Sony A77, that's 1/2 a stop down on ISO Noise due to it's SLT, so 'noise' is something I have learnt to accept and live with..

just compared the D3200 on dpreview comparison linked to vs my 5n - and the 3200 looks cleaner even at ISO 3200 - impressive

I want to change back from my 5n to a DSLR I miss my S5 Pro which I sold

I considered a D7000 but am put off by the bulk - its a lovely camera - but heavier and larger than I really need. 60D was another option

but D3200 looks quite promising at the price

Sony NEX 5N? RAW or JPEG? I can't believe the D3200 would be cleaner than the 5N in JPEG or RAW at any ISO.

I'll have a look for myself.

well maybe my eyes - maybe slightly more grain - but its a more pleasing grain to me - on the dpreview test shots anyway

both were raw - more detail too

If the D3200 is normalized to the same viewing size as the Sony 5n then I would not expect there to be a large difference. Furthermore, Nikon is very good at tweaking the Sony Ex-moor sensors, sometimes gaining more than 0.5 stops of noise performance form improved read out designs, improved ADCs, propriety noise suppression techniques etc. The sensor in the Nikon D7000 is clearly better than the Sony original, the sensor in the D3x was clearly much better than the Sony A900, etc. If Nikon release another high end DX camera (D400) then it is highly likely it will use a heavily tweaked Sony 24MP exmoor sensor, so doing a lot of the tweaking for the D3200 has no additional cost. It will mean that for a time the bottom end and top end Nikon DX cameras will share the same sensor while the middle camera (D5100, D7000) will share an older design (but still an amazing sensor and about the sensible limit for a DX sensor size).

If the D3200 is suitably tweaked by Nikon and the viewing sizes are the same I can imagine the D3200 outperforming the Sony 16mp sensor in the NEX 5n.

I await DXO mark to confirm.

Of course, that's not with the D3200 'downsized'. Still can't imagine it being as good as the 5N though.

mm does look a lot cleaner in that comparison

that said the 5n has the effect I don't like in my photos - it looks slightly cartoony is that a way to describe it ? the edges on the 5n don't look sharp/defined - I almost prefer the D3200 crop

I half like my 5n - PQ is not bad - but useability is doing my head in - its just frustrating - even after 8 mnths with it I often forget where things are in menus etc - they're just not in logical places

DXO akr have reviewd the Sony Nex5b and Nex7

http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/Ca.../(brand)/Sony/(appareil2)/737|0/(brand2)/Sony

The sensor in the Nikon D3200 is likely a tweaked version of the sensor in the Nex 7. As you can see on DXOmark the Nex 7 only has a marginally worse noise than the 5n.

Have been using the 3200 for a couple of weeks.
First thoughts after the d800 were not positive but it has grown on me .
Light, small, nice video one thing I could not live with is the small viewfinder .
Makes my d300 images look flat . Bring on the d400 or 600.

thanks peter - interesting- any sample pics please ?

I've been tempted with a D5100, D700, D3200, 650D or 60D - lol so not much difference in specs, etc

I had a S3 Pro, bought a Sony 5n - an d when I took some test photos, the 5n was sharper, more detail etc - so decided no point having 2 and sold the S5 Pro - problem is longer-term the Sony is a pain to use, and I miss my DSLR - wish I'd not sold it ..

problem is though much as I'd quite fancy a D7000 or 60D - they feel rather over-bulky and heavy to me - especially the D7000 .. not sure I really want the bulk anymore

Will post some sample pictures if it stops raining!
Would put it almost half way between the 300 and the 800 but less than a quarter of the cost.
Command dial is not stiff enough but quick to change , grip is too small for my hands but the size is growing on me
Got some 20 by 30 inch prints from the d800e the other day and had to compress the file size so throwing away some of the detail but not noticeable from 2 feet away from the print proving the resolution is wasted on the type of work I print out , 24 mp would be perfect to me
A d600 would be expensive as some of the lenses I have are dx

thanks peter

between 300 and 800 is very impressive as the 300 is a very good camera indeed

the only camera I've had so far that disappointed me though was the D200 - compared to the 2 Fujis I had (S3 and S5) it was awful IQ wise, DR was not great but worse than that even though I took RAWs the pictures always required lots of PP - far more than the Fujis. In particular people looked like they'd been in a submarine for 12 months - tones seemed off to me

I've noticed the D5100 for sale now at just under £420 (body only). Seems an absolute bargain. I'm thinking of grabbing one myself.
