Purchased a new 200-500 Nikon lens 2 month ago to go on holiday with. After carrying the lens on a hot day I noticed the paint by the vr switch had dissolved. This is not wearing as the white came off on my finger. Any suggestions as what I should do, as this could affect the resale value.

Sent the a email but have not had a reply.

When did you email them? they are not open on a weekend and usually take about 24 hrs to reply during the week.

If you sent it a while ago why have you not phoned them?

I can never understand why people come to forums asking what to do before they have done the obvious.

That is what I thought, a bit bad though as the 16-35 that I was carrying by the lens most days was not affected at all. They must have changed the paint type to emulsion.

I personally wouldn't worry too much. I've never used the 200-500, but for the money it's meant to be pretty decent and i'm sure you'll end up owning it for a while to come.

At the end of the day it's just a tool to do a job. Decent lenses like this tend to hold their value anyway. If and when you come to sell it, I doubt serious photographers will be put off by something cosmetic like this and would be more concerned with stuff like haze and fungus in the glass rather than paint on the barrel.

**** happens really. Some corrosive substance eon your fingers such as suntan lotion, mosquito repellent, deo, sweat. Lost a lot of the labeling form my D800 from such issues.

I doubt it affect second hand prices much, much less than front element scratches which themselves are not important. However, interested to see if nikon would do anything about it.

Lens is back, they did not cover the paint coming off, but Firmware updated and they checked focus shift deviation resolution recalibrated af and vr and it does seem a different lens. I need to do some better testing but on first impression it does seem sharper and faster focusing.

Yes but not on the day this happened as we were high up in many glacier, Will post some 100% crops at the weekend when I will have a chance to use the lens better

Sorry it has been a long time but I have only just had chance to use the lens.

Totally different lens, 320 iso wide open at 1/500 I have gone from very dissapointed to stunned. 100% crop.

It does. I had a camera body with only 4000 shutter activations which I would have described it as excellent but because of the rubbed of paint they insisted that it had to be listed as "well used" and knocked over 10% off the price.

Did you send the lens to nikon because you were unhappy with it?

Seems like they did a good job, was this nikon UK and how long did it take?

The text is screenprinted onto the lens.

I would find it annoying if you couldn't read it.

If it comes off completely a screenprinter with the right kit could replace it.

I'll be careful with deet when I'm on holiday just in case.
