Nildram\Pipex Problems

It's worth pointing out that isn't entirely Nildram's fault (though they should be poking BTw with a stick of course).

I full understand that, but i dont think it was anything to do with BT fixing anything on a Saturday evening. Mind you its worth pointing out my pings are not the same, before i was pinging jolt.co.uk ar 30ms which was good for me; now its around 50ms

First thing that springs to mind is Interleaving. Check your modem/router to see if it mentions Interleaving or Fast Path. If it doesn't then contact the ISP to find out whether it's been enabled or not.

But it definitely wasn't Nildram, so it must have been (or it was some line fault that's fixed itself).
As Phemo says, the increase in ping would point towards interleaving being enabled (which would make sense if your line screwed up and you were only synching at 184kbps).

My router is just a netgear dg834, is there a way i can find out. I asked about interleaving while on the phone to them a few days ago and they told me to take it off i would be charged, that doesn't sound right to me. Anyway i am not fully up to speed with this interleaving, is it a bad or good thing?

Hmmm had a wee read up on interleaving there and its not such a good thing. Think i will get it turned off and see how the line goes, if it cocks up again i will get it turned back on and take it from there.

It should say in wherever it gives attenuation/SNR margin.

It's right - Nildram charge a regrade fee to change the interleaving setting.

Depends on your perspective. Better error tolerance at the expense of a (variable) increase in latency.

it's bitten into some ports like 119 for example which the newsgroup I am part of uses.

crap i moved from Plusnet to Nildram thinking i would get a better service its rubbish and the only place am gonna move to soon is gonna be ZEN and stay with them perfect when i used to be on them tho i did move cus i wanted cheaper. CHEAPER = RUBBISH you pay for what you get these days.

The one good thing about being ill and off work has been that I have finally got the chance to sit down and see why my connection is so utterly appalling

I will only have been with nildram for 2 months after years of previously being with pipex, and due to going on holiday and a new job I assumed that my problems lay with my modem, now I see this and I am furious, why don't these companies at least email/phone/write to their customers and inform them.

Sometimes it makes me want to give it up and just use my work connection

hehe. i knew i was right not to move to nildram when i left pipex at the start of the year. "oh but nildram are independent...." was the advice. ok then..... :p

Shush you! :(

Then again, I moved from MinusNet so anything, even Pipex, is an improvement.

If i can remember at the start of the year nildram was.

my dates are a little out. i didn't leave pipex until april but even then, it was common knowledge that nildram were owned by pipex's parent co. - infact i even joked about joining nildram in this thread....

a few people blindly defending nildram in there..... ;)
