Have they been playing possum?

The CPU and GPU are built on the same package.

CPU: IBM PowerPC 7xx-based tri-core processor "Espresso" clocked at 1.24 GHz before the 3.0.0 update, 3.24 GHz after the 3.0.0 update. This is an evolution to the Broadway chip used in the Wii, is 64 bit and uses Power6 technote When IBM has said that Nintendo has licensed the Power7 tech from IBM, Nintendo is not using it for the Wii U, explaining its backwards compatibility.

GPU: AMD Radeon High Definition processor codenamed "Latte" with an eDRAM cache built onto the die clocked at 550 MHz before the 3.0.0 update, 800 MHz after the 3.0.0 update.

There's been a bit of discussion about this in the Wii U thread, though it's not been officially confirmed has it?

If it is true, I wonder if developers have worked to the proper specs or to the 'downgraded' version.

Or, is it literally just the OS which the speeds have been limited on?

The theory is that Nintendo wanted to shroud their spec in mystery as they were launching first of the new consoles..

Maybe we will see some amazing first and third party games that will properly push the system.

So far Need for Speed Wii U is the only game to be properly ported with HD PC textures. Maybe this is about to change?

I don't know that much about the Wii-U but wouldn't such a dramatic change like this mean that the update became vital for most new games and then mean that they would have to include the firmware update on the game disc for consoles not connected to the internet? But then wouldn't many older games then need patching to cope with the completey different clock speeds? again, thinking about consoles that aren't connected to the internet.

Its not true think about it the cooling for the system would need to be designed for it.

The consensus on most forums is that its not true, the power draw at the wall hasn't measurably increased - which it definitely would given such an overclock.

The more logical explanation is that the chips have always been at these clocks, but the initial readings were wrong (they were taken in wii mode). Again though, its all speculation. Nintendo will never confirm/deny anything.

No chance this is true. A modest increase, I could perhaps almost believe, but they wouldn't more than double the clockspeed in a single update. Why would they have even clocked it down in the first place?

What would this mean if it is true?

One of the big issues I have read a lot about, is that developers arent to keen on making games for it due the CPU power when compaired with the 360 / PS3. Wii u being the slower of them. Would this now no longer be the case if ture and temp developers over?

That the developers being iddiots though as the are lazy and arent coding the physics etc so that its all run off the gpgpu.

Hence why all the "proper" ports, I'm thinking Deus Ex and Need for Speed here,
Look better than the PS3/Xbox360 counterpart

Considering how badly Need for Speed sold I can't see many developers taking the time to do 'proper' ports anyway.

Though the fact Need for Speed has less players in multiplayer means the CPU speed still affected the port.

Because sales directly affect what games come to the system, if you think the console is going to survive purely based on Nintendo's first party output which currently has been pitiful then I really don't know what you're thinking.

LOL ? Nintendo consoles was mostly bought by people that enjoyed the games by Nintendo, 3rd party titles were just an added bonus :)

just like devs being lazy on PS3 right? ;)
