Announced alongside their new phone deal with Dena - it looks like we'll be seeing it sometime next year with release a year or so after.

Thoughts? Too early? Can't come soon enough?

I for one am ready for a new Nintendo console if they go the traditional route and compete headon with MS and Sony!

Kinda hard to comment without knowing exactly what this thing is.

So many questions, so little answers.

Looking at diagrams Nintendo have put out it doesn't actually seem to replace any of the existing systems - it seems like possibly something that will partner the 3DS and Wii U.

Need more info!

More interested in the account system - Nintendo might do what Sony/MS have been doing for a decade - at bloody last...

I expect it to be a tablet of some form that accepts Wii U and 3DS games - nothing that special

Nothing but speculation, a lot seem to think it's an all in one type handheld and home console. Pleased about the account system but it was pretty obvious that was coming from the Club Nintendo announcement (closure).

Meh, they haven't exactly made great use of the WiiU yet so hopefully it's not another home console.

It doesn't appear to be a 3DS or a Wii U replacement.

There's talk of a "brand new concept" too and bearing in mind Nintendo aren't shy of trying new things out - thinking outside the box - that could mean pretty much anything.

It could be their VR solution, which would need new hardware to power it. My hunch is it'll be a WiiU replacement due to less than stellar sales.

Taken from Eurogamer :

During a press conference in Japan Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata mentioned new hardware, codenamed NX.

The press conference was held to announce a partnership between Nintendo and Japanese mobile game specialist DeNA to create mobile games based on Nintendo's intellectual property.

Nintendo also plans to create a new membership service, with DeNA, that will work across all Nintendo hardware, mobile devices and PC.

It was while announcing this new membership service that Iwata mentioned the new NX hardware.

Here's the direct quote from Iwata, which we captured and published in video form below.

"Nintendo, together with DeNA, will jointly develop a new membership service, which encompasses the existing Nintendo 3DS, Wii U, the new hardware with a brand new concept NX, smart devices and PCs."

UPDATE: Here's Iwata's quote on the NX, translated officially by Nintendo:

As proof that Nintendo maintains strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business, let me confirm that Nintendo is currently developing a dedicated game platform with a brand-new concept under the development codename "NX". It is too early to elaborate on the details of this project, but we hope to share more information with you next year.
Also, Iwata said Nintendo's new membership service would play a key role in NX.

Nintendo, together with DeNA, will jointly develop a new membership service which encompasses the existing Nintendo 3DS and Wii U systems, the new hardware system with a brand-new concept, NX, and smart devices and PCs, and Nintendo will be the primary party to operate this new membership service.
Unlike the Club Nintendo membership service that Nintendo has been operating, the new membership service will include multiple devices and create a connection between Nintendo and each individual consumer regardless of the device the consumer uses. This membership will form one of the core elements of the new Nintendo platform that I just mentioned.

I'd be surprised if it was as not sure who their target market would be there - their core fans who have WiiU's nowl wouldn't be best pleased I'm sure, and a new Nintendo console would still struggle to gain traction with the XBox and PS4 crowd.

They could try and emulate the success of the Wii in going after the casual market I guess, but that would require something cheap and simple again, which I can't see them doing with the WiiU still available.

My money's on something completely different to what's currently available.

I dunno. I have a WiiU and, while there are certainly decent titles, it hasn't blown me away. No more so than the GC and Wii did. They had some great games too, arguably some of the best of their given generation, just not enough variety and overall content. The fact is we haven't had a Nintendo home console that gets close to the SNES and N64 glory days and if it wasn't for handhelds Nintendo would be in trouble. The lack of 3rd party software has hit the Wii and WiiU hard. Provide a console with first party Nintendo games and the power to run big 3rd party hitters and people will be throwing their money at Nintendo.

I think the casual market is relatively dead compared to when the wii launched, I feel that was a one off that Nintendo did well to capitalise upon.

With Nintendo you never can tell, could be something as successful as the wii or as dire as the virtual boy, what if they released a console which was more traditional, a standard controller which we all know they can do superbly (snes/n64/gamecube) but with the power and features in line with the next gen consoles from Sony and MS.

Would you buy a Nintendo console that had a true vision of networked gaming, a blu ray drive, sizeable and expandable storage, one that could play titles equally as well as either of the two "hardcore" consoles but also had full access to Nintendo's IP such as Mario / Zelda etc ?

Given proper third party support I would, but that's a big heap of hope right there.

The last thing we want is another Call of Duty or Assassin's Creed machine. If it is another games console, which probably it will. Hope they get good 3rd support aswell as keeping their own IP's but new IP's. We have had enough Mario Party's, Kart's and Smash Bros now.

So you want purely new IP's from Nintendo and 3rd Party's?

If I was to guess I'd say they're going to attempt an all-in-one - a handheld system you can "dock" at home with the dock hooked up to the TV.

Walk in the front door - dock the handheld - pick up your traditional controller and off you go.

It ticks the home console box, it ticks the handheld box, it ticks the off tv play box (take it out of the dock and sit on the sofa).

That said - this being Nintendo it could be something completely out of the park - they can be a bit random can Nintendo!

Cant see it being a WiiU replacement, they have big games such as Zelda, Xenoblade, splatoon etc coming out and WiiU sales have picked up. A console with similar power to PS4 would end up just having loads of Assassins creed and EA sports games which isn't what most people want a Nintendo console for.
I would like to see them get 3rd parties back on board with games similar to Skyrim or Fallout though

I could see them releasing a tablet that has all the usual capabilities plus Nintendo game exclusives
