Evening all,

Had a letter waiting for me at home....NIP 36 in a 30, Ive only been driving a year and a bit, normally very cautious and very annoyed with myself.

I was wondering what can I expect? Fine? Points? etc

I will admit to it as I know where/when etc. This is my first offence and have no idea what the outcomes of these are.

Any advice/knowledge would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

You'll most likely be offered a speed awareness course in lieu of the SP30, it varies in price but it's usually £80-100. It's definitely worth doing this as you avoid the points on your licence and the subsequent insurance premium hike.

If your NIP is anything like the one I got recently, it will tell you if you are being offered an awareness course or not already, so if it hasn't done so (it will be blindingly obvious) then you're looking at 3 points and £60 in all likelihood.

My insurance went up £0 with 3 points. The second 3 took it up a whopping £50.

I was not offered a speed awareness course in the NIP. It came in the second letter after I sent the NIP back.

Of course your mileage may vary but as he's only been drving a year I'd imagine his price hike will be slightly more significant.

While obviously it's a good excuse to fleece people, there are now so many people with 3 and 6 points on their licence that statistically i bet it has little impact on how "safe" a driver you are and therefore has less effect on insurance premiums that are largely worked out on statistics.

Remember if you have been driving less than 2 years, then 6pts will result you in having to re-pass your driving test.

Be very cautious.
