nLite 1.3 final released

No probs. You used it before then? Site should be working now. It was up when I posted, obviously but when I got back from Uni at 5pm  it was down.

This is something i MUST learn. Is it very straight forward?

I remember threads on it here previously with links to driver packs or something that people recommend you integrate in to your .iso files. Anyone have those?

Yes I would agree with this.

Again I would agree with but you have to be careful and not make any mistakes.

Well drivers are normally unique to each PC so I use a prog called Driver Grabber to get my drivers for me which I then integrate into nLite.

The "driver packs" you are on about are I think the RyanVM update packs that are released roughly every month with all the updates for Windows XP since SP2 was released. This means you can download the RVM pack as I call it, integrate it and have a secure Windows install from the off since you have added the latest Windows patches.

The link for RyanVM is http://www.ryanvm.net/msfn/. There is a email on update release option that bledd pointed out to me so when RyanVM releases a new pack, you get an email about it. Better than checking it every day like I do.:o

And by asking about nLite you've effectively cut yourself in the water, allowed blood to bleed and stuck your foot in the water so bledd will automatically sense your keen interest and will be here soon to advise you more no doubt.:D

Also you can use a Virtual Machine such as Virtual Box (free and perhaps opensource) or Microsoft VirtualPC to run your nLite iso before you install it. This means you can see how it works and what, if anything, goes wrong so you can fix it before spending hours fixing Windows.

RVM and driverpacks are different

driverpacks can work alongside nlite, but you can't integrate them using nlite, see here http://driverpacks.net/

it adds loads of drivers to your cd tho, so takes up a lot of space

personally i just use nlite to integrate SATA/RAID and ethernet drivers, things like graphics card drivers get updated too often to keep making a clean disc to integrate the new ones all the time

nlite works really well with ryanvm hotfix pack though, as marc suggested :)

See I said he'd be here in a flash.:p

Bledd, I meant I thought Tried&Tested was thinking about the RyanVM pack and said driver packs. Perhaps he was talking about driver packs but I interpreted him as being on about RyanVM stuff mm kay!

heh :)

-tried&tested, i'd run nlite on a clean xp disc (integrate sp2 using nlite if you don't have it on there already) and dont add anything to it -until you've tried & tested it

You raised a good point in your previous post about stuff like gfx drivers. As you know I've had plenty hassle with the ATI drivers and they change every month so I might just make a basic nLite disc with my nForce drivers etc but no gfx and then I have a basic disc that won't need updating every month.

Oh and if I had a quid for each time I said you'd turn up and then you did...I'd have a quid now.:D

Brilliant, thanks for the information and links. When i get a few moments at work i'll look in to this and try.

Does it allow you to include application installations in the ISO for things that i'd like installed as default?

Yeah you can get stuff installed but I think this is quite tricky to achieve.

You can also plonk stuff into a folder which will then get copied to your hard disk during install so for example if you have a folder called 'Install' you can get the folder and its contents copied to C:\Install and then run all the stuff in there.

For installing programs check out http://www.nliteos.com/addons/ to see if Nuhi has stuff there you want and check out http://unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp/ and look at the various methods of installing stuff eg RunOnceEX.

I'm sure I'm about to earn my 2nd pound off bledd soon.;)

Perhaps I'm being a knob but how does one use addons? They come in as .rars and they appear to be packaged for use by nlite but I don't see an option to put them anywhere.

Do they go with the hotfixes?

Yes unless there is a 7Zip file or something inside the rar file. Just add the file in and nLite will moan if it doesn't like the file.

Ok, so when I install Windows with all these addons what will it do for me? Will these programs already be installed and ready to go? Will they be waiting somewhere ready for me to install them? I'm just curious before I have a go with this and nuke my Vista partition. ;)

test it in virtualbox or virtualpc

if you can use nlite, you'll figure out virtualbox in a second, its simple as

I'd recommend VirtualBox, its free and open source. I've tried Virtual PC 2004 but not the 2007 one yet. But as bledd says make the iso and then test it in a virtual environment. Then you can see what the iso is doing/will do when you install it. Anything you've left in/not put in/wrong setting will become obvious here before you nuke yer Vista install.:D

Hi,

I too am going to try nLite out for the first time, sounds like a true god send, I used to spend hours configuring and removing stuff after installing windows, but not hopefully not anymore with nLite!

I just wanted to ask though, does anyone have a link to a guide or something that is updated and can basically tell you which options to remove and which to go for? I know nLite has some of this built in already but some more help with it would be much appreciated. I basically do some graphics and web design work on my pc and play some games, so some of the stuff I dont know if I need it or not. Also if there was a recommended list of addons to intergrate that would be nice as well.

This virtualbox program sounds very cool, definately going to try that.

Cheers!

Some addons on nLite site:http://www.nliteos.com/addons/

If you go to the nLite site there is a forum link. This will take you to nLite's section of MSFN.org. I would link you directly but the site isn't loading for me.

On MSFN.org nLite there is a guide telling you what you can and cannot remove for certain programs. Take a look there if the site works for you. I'm sure bledd or I will post back with the exact links if you are having problems and when the site is back up.
