nLite 1.3 final released

Cracking app Nlite.

I use it to create system CD's with less common updated Drivers, SATA to save pressing F6 during install, and add firefox, Ryan hotfix updates, and slipstream SP2 into windows XP.

I also use it to remove all the crud that windows has, and attempts to install, and you can add addons, so you end up with a CD that is fully updated, installs your SATA and RAID drivers without pressing F6, fully automated, and if you use a CMD lines.txt and $OEM$ folder you can even install applications using the admin login using un-attend mode, and install the final applications such as CD Burning software, anti virus and any other application that can't be added in or ran in un-attend mode.

It is such a time saver, as once your CD is created, you can just use it almost like an image, and if you really get your act together you can use an image application to image off your C partition, and if you mess it up during the life of your PC, just re-image, and its back to what it was before you messed up, just need to perhaps re-install a few games etc...

I'm just about to re-image tonight after some rogue codec installed to my machine and crashed video playback... If it wasn't for Nlite and imaging, I'd be facing a few hours install tonight, but it will be a 30 min re-image and back to usable, and fully protected. Job done.

I've also just discovered nlite and virtualbox - it's great stuff. :) Been tinkering with it all day.

What add-ons are you guys using?

So far I have these:

I'm already using these apps from and external HD, so I won't be needing any of these slipstreamed.

I'm still on the lookout for a lightweight virus scanner and firewall tho. I quite like the comodo ones, but they need a serial number when they are installed... I wonder if they could be slipstreamed? Also, any other use app add-on recommendations?

Also, can big apps like Photoshop be slipstreamed? Is it just a case of being able to fit it all on the disk?

Finally, is it possible to install files in the root directory, or a seperate folder to "program files" or "windows"?

EDIT: Oh noes! Just tried testing it out, and I'm getting an error from media player classic.exe

"This application has failed to start because DSOUND.dll was not found. Re-installing this application may fix this problem." Wtf~? Help!

EDIT2: Fixed it... realised you have to tick the components you want to REMOVE, not leave in. :D

i prefer not using addons (besides ryanvm and a few small things like tweakui and calc plus)

but using $OEM$ folders instead, and making standalone exe installers, this way you can control everything about how each app installs

I agree. I used the firefox and spyware blaster add ons, and the ryanvm hotfixes, but for everything else I use an $OEM$ folder as well. Nlite has the options to help you create your bat file to kick off the install of additional applications, just use the auto admin login to login a few times to complete the installations. You will need to set an admin password for this to work, I tend to not bother with photoshop etc.. But you can get office installed using a transform file etc... This enters the CD key for you, and it allows for further automation and speeds the process up. with a custom MST file, you can fine tune Office 2003 or XP to how you want it, reduce disk space, install what you need all during the install of Windows XP, it really does save a lot of time when you need to re-install at a later date.

It's amazing how much disk space you save by removing all the languages you will never use... Well, it always amazes me anyway... Mmm. Must get out more.
