No 5.1 to speakers on windows (via HDMI or Optical)

As the title, u can't seem to get 5.1

Via HDMI I only have the option of stereo or Atmos.
Via optical I only have options of stereo?

I have connected the optical cable to the "CD" optical port in my Onkyo onkyo tx-nr686

If I configure Dolby Atmos on HDMI I can configure so it's only got front, rear and center speaker, but will it just sound like 5.1?

Any ideas?

Make sure your software and os is set to bitstream. Load up MPC HC and select options for output

Will setting it in that change settings for games as well?

Can't tell how to set to bitstream in Windows

Settings under MPC HC will be for videos only.

When I select Dolby Atmos, and remove the side speakers so it looks like a 5.1 config, will that be setting it to 5.1 in windows? The receiver is showing DD+ 5.1 and as far as I can tell it seems like surround? Not sure if I'll be missing some sounds though?

No the setting in the avr won't effect windows output. Basically you want to bitstream the video audio codecs and for pcm output as pcm
Windows usually doesn't have many options just go into playback options and select the correct output itll be in here somewhere

Send audio and picture to TV from PC and pass through audio to AVR, well that's what I'd do. Not much reason plugging stuff direct into receivers

Unless you have e-arc you won't get hd audio. Also depending on the TV may cause issues. I had drop outs, longer lock on, clicks on source change with TV being the hub and that is e-arc also. Going to the AV pre sorted it

Check TV and onkyo has e-arc support otherwise max you'll get is regular Dolby digital & DTS, and not hd audio, Atmos, DTS:x

What a pain getting devices to talk digitally via hdmi, I'm so glad my 5.1 speakers are connected to pc via old fashioned 3.5mm jacks which "just work"
