As per title really, I've put a DVD in to watch and it plays, but there is no audio... I've looked for obvious enable/disable settings in Control Panel > Sound but couldn't find anything, and the 'test' function doesn't play the sound.

It's an OEM Sata DVD/RW and all my sound works perfectly aside from this so I'm a bit confused as to what to do.

Anyone have any solutions?

As a guess I'd say it's a codec issue where you have a decoder for the video but lack one for AC3 audio perhaps, or something.

Do you still get the old school audio hook up cables that go from the drive to the sound card? or am I just living in the dark ages right there

I'm using Windows Media Player, but it's not down to software I don't think as it doesn't play a sound when I use the test function in the control panel.

I also thought that sound was carried through SATA?

Download a codec pack like K-Lite, that should clarify any codec issues.

SATA is the connections hard drives use. Most sound is now transmitted via inbuilt speakers, 3.5mm headphone cables, and HDMI.

Right click on the sound icon in the bottom right hand corner of your screen, and select playback devices. What is set to default?

I had the same issue.

Downloaded a codec pack (the very same Hybrid just recommened - K-Lite) and voila :)

Goes to show how naff Windows is though :p

Default is currently "Speakers - Realtek High Definition Audio", with options of "ATI HDMI Output", "Speakers - Plantronics Headset", "Realtek Digital Output" & "Realtek Digital Output(Optical)"

Will give this codec pack a try.

Edit: Any particular website to download it off (Trustworthy or that you've used) It seems to be DL'able off lots of sites.

Downloading and installing the codec seems to have worked. I HAVE SOUNDZ! =)

Thanks for the help guys.
I can also play the film on my 2nd screen whilst playing WoW on my first... didn't think that would work ;)
