No Bashing please. 780 or nvidia or ATI

I had a 290x but with all the problems I DSR'd it and got a 780 couldn't be happier, the 780 is quiet and cool it just works I don't have to mess with settings or drivers like I did on amd

I had a play with a 290X, had to custom cool it, as the ref fan wasn't very nice to listen to under load. When the 780Ti launched, I switched back to green and very happy, got two in the end, run both at stock in SLI, in games don't bother with overclocking or custom fan profile, just run cards at stock. Fast, cool / quiet and stable. Plug in and play..

I like PhysX
Put a lot of hours into Borderlands 2. Turned PhysX off to see what it looked like, the difference was huge. AMD owners are missing a lot when playing Borderlands 2.

If you play PhysX titles, it's definitely worth it.

Please stop generalizing as if everyone is obliged to like all PhysX effects and the amount of effects chucked on screen.

The majority of the people i play BL2 with are NV owners and they all have PhysX effects on low, just like me, there is no off option.

780 or Nvidia? What am I missing? :D

I was Nvidia, then used an ATI (I think they were still ATI back in the 5870 days?) and then went back to Nvidia. I've just recently gone back to AMD cards.
Although I didn't really play a lot of PhysX games I was a bit concerned about losing the option when going to AMD, just in case a game I wanted to play did make good use of it. It's still a bit of a concern. I didn't try playing the PhysX games I did play without PhysX, so I'm not sure what difference it made.
I think I'd probably be the same with regards to Mantle if I get an Nvidia card in the future.

As I think someone else mentioned, I often tend to buy 2 cards these days (once you go multi-GPU it's hard to go back to 1 I find) so I don't think I notice the hit of PhysX on performance too much. In the same way I'm also not sure I'll see much benefit from Mantle.

I really just buy what takes my fancy at the time. Recently I decided that since I buy 2 cards it works out cheaper with AMD. I also felt like trying AMD as AMD owners seem to think they're very good, so I thought I'd try them.

I know some people are firmly in one camp or the other, for whatever reasons, and so probably already know if they're next GPU will be read team or green team. I just buy what I like at the time, I couldn't tell you what my next GPU would be, I'm already looking forward to it though! :)

EDIT:
The other thing that tempted me to try AMD was that my monitors don't do Nvidia 3D Vision but do work well with AMD 3D via TriDef. Since I bought 3D monitors I wanted to try it out. It's nice, but doubt it's enough to affect my next purchasing decision.

PhysX won't last dude... Both next generation consoles are packing AMD GPU's and are doing GPGPU via OpenCL which is an open standard and will run on any GPU.

PhysX will die...

bought a 290x on release for a rig i was updating for a friend good frame rates he wasnt worried about noise as he games with his headphones on, custom fan curve never throttles
for my own main rig got a windforce 780 Rev 2 as it was cheaper than a AiB 290 at the time(NZ) runs at a nice speed out of the box quiet and cool we have swopped cards back and forth between the two and other than benchmarks tbh games seem about the same smoothness on both but fps is higher ofc by a few digits on the 290x in a couple of games. He loves batman and physx something he didn't think about when we got his 290 as he hadnt seen it with it on as he's always been AMD and has decided he will be going back to Nvidia next change
For me i like Physx But for how little games there are that use it i wouldn't base my gpu on it, I buy on what has the best features/performance at the time
Awesome cooler nice quiet and cheaper at the time than a 290 my 780 just made sense

I went back and forth between 780's and 290's over the last month and decided on a 290 because I wanted 3D to work with my monitor and Physx doesn't bother me.

Seeing as Radeon will be getting Freesync and Shadowplay equivalent it meant I would have the best of both worlds, plus my 290 Gaming Edition was £50 cheaper than a 780. You wouldn't be dissapointed with either.

I went with a 780 when I had this exact same question just because I had been with AMD for years and wanted a change. Went with the Gigabyte WF Ghz edition and don't regret it.

People talking about PhysX though, I tried it and noticed it absolutely demolished my fps in BL2 and Black Flag which are the two games I tried, and immediately turned it off. I only run at 1920x1200 too. It's great if you like the trade off or if you're getting the card for that exact reason, but I think most people probably turn it off tbh unless they're running multiple cards.

With the Xbone and PS4 both running AMD hardware and with Mantle being a thing now, you might be more inclined to go with an AMD card, which I probably would've done if I didn't fancy a change.

I was using nvidia card for years, mostly because I love evga and had their cards ever since 260.
The warranty, customer support, watercooling does not void warranty, stable drivers which rarely crash. You name it.
Also, I am bald so don't need hair dryer, don't have a garden so don't need leafblower either. I also have well working heating.
Umm, sorry, troll was unintended :D

For air cooling i would get i would have got a 780, but i managed to get a 290 plus waterblock for £360 and as i planned to water cool the GPU anyway it made sense to go for the cheaper card.
Ive got to say i don't miss physix or tress hair cobblers as im not really into the eye candy just a good frame rate and overall gameplay does it for me, i wouldn't pay an extra £100 for rubbish bags or moveable hair from either camp.

Moveable hair looks rubbish on both platforms.:D

Bigmac I would pay the extra for the 780.. I too was considering a card from the red team for the 1st time in over 10 years - last ATi card I owned was a 9800 pro

Mate I opted for the EVGA 780Ti and I was completely blown away by the performance, Overclocking ability, build quality, cooling and warranty back up if I ever need it. ;)

TressFX runs on any AMD or Nvidia graphics card, and it costs nothing extra in hardware, plus you can switch it off if it ****es you off. However, its hilarious PhysX is touted as some willy waving extra feature which is worth paying for, especially since BL2 is one of the few PhysX games(I would say the only I can remember) which had some decent enough effects, but then the fluid and spatter effects were massively overdone too, otherwise it would technically run OK on a CPU.

The GTX780TI and R9 290X are also disproportionately more expensive than the GTX780 and R9 290 for the performance boost they offer.

Moreover, the R9 290 and R9 290X being hairdryers?? It seems some people have forgotten all the cards released with custom coolers in the last 6 weeks or so. Build quality of each OEM is unlikely to differ in price comparable cards they do for both companies - they are all made by the same people in the same factories in China. Key PCB parts are probably all sourced from the same companies. All the graphics cards are mass produced electronics, not some Rolex. Within 18 to 24 months the cards are going to be old hat anyway.

Also, unless you get the remainder of the warranty, you are taking a risk spending hundreds of quid on a secondhand graphics card. None of the people in this thread are going to give you a replacement graphics card or repair it for you,if it has problems in the next year or two.

I thinking just for a change, I was Nvidia for so long then the 9800 can out.
I think I went red as it was cheaper and near performance. I'm running CF 7950's at the mo. I am not unhappy with the Red team but would like to compare the visuals to the Green.
Running 1400. No plans to change.
