There is a program called CureRom that you can use to make shortcuts that load up Daemon Tools, load the relevant ISO into it from your HDD, then launch the game. It hides Daemon aswell, so most games run with the click of a mouse and you don't have to arse about with DVD's!!

Neither are illegal to have or use in the UK (presuming you own the game), it's only the distribution of them that makes them illegal as they're distributing copyright'd material 
Plus I bet it's against the "End User Agreement" to use cracks, but that doesnt count 
Patches are alright so long as you still have the original exe, then you just swap the original back, patch, then get an updated no-cd exe... Worth the hassle IMO, for the sake of not needing to fiddle with CD's every time you start the game.
