Got what I think it's an issue with my phone/connection

I don't seem to get data connection unless I have a H+ network link
If I have H icon I can't get any data

Texts/calls work on if I have any type of signal

Phone is oneplus one
Network is 3

I know I need 3g for data but wouldn't have thought it needs H+

I have come to conclusion of one of the following..
Phone is playing up
Signal is being reported incorrectly
Setting somewhere in phone I need to adjust
Something on network end (unlikely I think)

It's very annoying as it is very jumpy. I can be sitting as I am now and signal us jumping from H to H+ all the time
Could almost be a power saving thing. Often when I click 'post' on forum.. Ie I now need a connection.. H+ will just be picked up.. If this is the case it's very annoying as it's very laggy

H+ is a form of 3G. 3 uses H+ technology to provide 3G to its customers, hence why you need to see this symbol as it shows you're connected to the mobile internet. Some phones will display H+ as either H or 3G.

Sounds like you're in an area with patchy 3 coverage if the symbol disappears, unlike other networks there's no 2G network for 3 customers to fall back to.

H+ is generally seen as different to H on most of the phones I've had. H+ is a faster version than the standard H. IIRC commonly referred to as 3G (H) and 3.5G (H+)

Perhaps 3 only have HSPA+ however?
 
Phones show the following: "3G" is typically base CDMA speeds, H = HSDPA and H+ is HSPA+. Some really bad phones show "3G+ which typically means either HSDPA or HSPA+ (nearly all sites in the UK are the latter now).

These are all variants of the same base technology, CDMA or "3G". You could get data over 2G if it's enabled but Three wouldn't pay any networks for "fallback" from 2013 resulting in pretty much zero 2G coverage from Hutch, an interesting decision considering their coverage outside of metro.

TURBO EDIT: A phone's signal must be of a specific "level" for it to move between 3G to H to H+ as each time you do the jump you basically require a stronger signal to send more packets over a set timeframe with accuracy. You're on the cusp of 2 levels, each time you move between the levels you sorta do a handshake which sometimes is fairly evident.

Your phone is working correctly, you just have poor signal.

I was just trying to keep it simple :p. But pretty much H+ is a faster standard and I'm pretty sure with 3 they only use this.

My friend who is on 3 had his Samsung phone showing H+, but his new HTC only shows up to H, although speedtests did show it was still H+. iPhones on the other hand only shows up to 3G... so the icons can sometimes be a bit misleading.

It's more why am I not getting any data on H when I have full signal strength (according to the bar)

So it is going to standby when showing H?

In which case.. Can you stop that?
 
Out of interest, if Three is only H and H+ equipment how are texts and calls sent over the network? I thought texts and calls were still sent via older 2G infrastructure.

Essentially no.

What your phone is doing is receiving no reply from Three temporarily and so remains on "standby". If you turn on airplane mode and then turn it off that should fix it.

It's a strange issue that I also get occasionally. I think it may be to do with congestion.

It comes on and off all the time.
As in I will have full bars technically (I know bars isn't exactly signal)
But it literally turns off.

I will tap 'refresh' for example.
Few seconds of lag..
Refresh occurs
Almost immediately it goes back to H

It's much quicker than on/off aeroplane for example

Sometimes the lag is unnoticeable.
Sometimes it's very very irritating

This is the best type of correct, technically correct :) Unfortunately marketing decided that 2.5G was EDGE at Orange resulting in a a bunch of us engi's having a much lower opinion of that side of the business for a while. 2G was circuit switched.

They travel over 3G just fine, if you're on a network with wideband calling enabled then you're on a 3G call "end to end" (delicious delicious WB-AMR. How I love you so). It's easier to think of it as method of delivering a payload (or technically, part of the OSI stack) like ethernet or wifi - you still deliver packets from your favourite website, just the medium changes for the final hop. 4G voice (Voice over LTE - VoLTE) is a bit tougher, not all networks have this but they are testing it.

Back to OP, What's the phone? Do you have data sleep enabled? I've seen this on a bespoke not-public build before of a phone which had hyper aggressive power control, sorta like the new Sony stuff but ULTRA XXX-treme levels.
 
I experience the same as this, I'm on Three too.

Used to think it might have been my handset, but had that replaced yesterday and it persists, and now you have it tool. I'm using an LG G2.

I think it's been covered, it's just a lack of signal and the H is just a lie.

Aren't 3 going through lots of coverage upgrades? Or at least I think I read that?
 
what version of android are you on? 4.4? i used to get this all the time on my nexus 5 on tmobile. only changed once i went to 5.0, and now iv'e just reported as no network at all. not sure what's wrong here.

i'm of the thought that android was incorrectly reporting i had signal when i didn't if say i had signal 20 seconds ago, but it's now changed to if i don't it shows it instantly. very annoying to lose signal but at least i now know.
 
Double check your settings and also make sure that the network is selected correctly.
I can get data through when my phone says E (for Edge) just slowly, and even sometimes just G (for GPRS) and I'm on 3....
