So I got a PC tower cheap second hand. The guy selling it got a new one for his birthday so let his old one collect dust for awhile

But the pc tower needs ram taken out and reinserting everytime it boots up UNLESS the Ram is taken out and put back in otherwise I get No Display on my monitor

Any idea on what the problem could be? I was thinking bad Ram sticks but why would they work when taken out and reinserted? Maybe a faulty dying motherboard?

Or does the RAM and RAM slots need properly cleaning?

Worth barring in mind that once the RAM sticks are removed and reinserted the PC works like a charm.. no display issues and I was on it for 5-6 hours afterwards with no issues.

Thanks

Is the bios holding onto settings? Maybe a dead CMOS battery or the clear CMOS jumper has been left on the clear position, or something obscure like that. I'd check the manual for the board and check all the jumpers and/or switches are set to the default configuation (the manual will tell you what jumpers and switches are and what they should be set to by default). Does the display stay on after a restart? As micky said though, if the system has two sticks of memory, test with them individually (and test each one in the different memory slots also).

Also check what speed the RAM is set to run at in BIOS. I get the same behaviour if I'm too aggressive with RAM speed/timings - removing the reinserting the RAM may force the BIOS to detect a RAM change and hence boots it at 'safe' speeds however when you reboot it will apply the settings. e.g. say you have 3200mhz RAM it might boot at 2400mhz when first inserted but on reboot will be at whatever the BIOS has set.
