No display with new card (XFX 5850)

I'm having problems with my new XFX Radeon 5850. When I start the computer up I don't get any display on my monitor. Everything appears to be fine as the fans all start up including the fan on the 5850 (bloody hell it's loud though!) but no display on the screen.

I thought it might be a problem with my PCI-E connection on the motherboard so I tried the second slot but the same problem. I had to remove the SATA connections to do this anyway as the card is too big so this wouldn't have been much use.

Next I tried my old card (8800GTS) which booted up fine but displays graphical artefacts. This was the reason for replacing it, problems from the start and then it would BSOD before booting windows so I thought the card had packed up.

So I'm thinking it's either a faulty PCI-E port or a bad card. Any suggestions?

My spec is:

Corsair 850HX
Corsair H50
Asus P5N-E SLI Motherboard (Maybe due to it primarily being an SLI / Nvidia board but I read that this wouldn't matter unless I was going to crossfire)
OCZ 6GB DDR RAM
Q6600 @ 2.4GHZ

If you need any more details or have some suggestions let me know

EDIT: I've had a quick google and couldn't find a solution but I know that the mobo doesn't have the latest BIOS so I'll try updating that.

if your old card works but has artofacts but thats why you got a new one i only see that the issue could be the card try and get it rma'ed and let them test it and find out if its your card or your mobo

If using win 7 you can try this-
8800GTS in pci-e 1 and 5850 in pci-e 2 then install the ati drivers. Don't restart, shut down then move the 5850 into slot 1 and start up.

When I went from 4870 to 5870, I had same problem and i thought the card was duff, but it wasn't.

Turns out it wasn't a DOA card but actually bad motherboard support. I found a post on the Asus forum where a lot of people were having the exact same problems. That was where I found the suggestion to flash the BIOS to the latest version. This has fixed my problem now.

However, when I first boot the computer I get the fan on the card spinning at 100% and no display. Only when I hit the reset button on the case does the fan speed down and then I get display!

It's something I'll have to live with for now. I was pricing up a new i7 combo last night when I couldn't find a solution.
