No Extra Content for PS3's Devil May Cry 4

sounds pretty cool that you can watch the story so far whilst its installing.

i think it should definately just be an option though as joe public might get a bit cheesed off or lack the technical knowledge to install a new HDD.

good idea though if its an option!

I'm in favour of this if it cuts down load times, more dev's should take advantage of the fact that every PS3 has a HDD, and not necessarily FORCE the user to install, but give the option (such as UT3).

True but I wouldn't say he was exactly right. The thing which separates consoles from pcs is installing a game IMO. Now your basic non tech gamer wants to be able to go into a store, pick a game, go home and play and then get on with their life. They are going to be a little puzzled as to why they have to wait 25 minutes which could be spent pleasing the misses :D

If I owned a PS3 I could easily wait that time. I have nothing better to do and if it speeds up load times I am all for it. But there would always be that niggling feeling in the back of my head that I could be doing the same and better on my pc (other games).

Suppose its a way around the crap BR read speeds, might become a bit of a problem if more and more games force it, therefore forcing a HDD upgrade or deleting games, not so great.

I'm not really in favour of it being forced, like you HAVE to wait 25mins when you first put this disc in, but I do like the idea of having the option.

You have a 360, it has a 20GB (In most cases) HDD, you download content from XBL, when your drive gets full you delete some old stuff? I don't see the problem?

I agree though as I said above, I don't like being FORCED into it, I'd rather have the option.

Exactly right.

The first games that offered the option that I had, like Ninja Gaiden, and VF5, I did the install. Would much rather install where possible, to cut down on load times later. (EDIT: I'd often wished Motorstorm allowed an install, for that damn vehicle selection screen at least!)

However, it's nice to have a choice about these things.
If memory serves, R&C had a forced installed, as does Assassin's Creed, albeit small installs.

Speaking personally, I'd always do the install given the choice anyway, and then simply deleted the installed data when I'm done with the game.

It's not really the same as installing to PC.
There's not any choice of folders to go to.
You don't have to config you controls.
You don't have to select your own screen res.
You don't have to fiddle with any detail levels,
and you don't have to update drivers, or manually check for patches.

Not that I mind doing these things before a game, I'm used to it, but sticking a disk in, and leaving it automatically get on with what it's gotta do isn't such a hardship really, waiting once before you play it, is better than waiting each time a level etc loads, when you're sitting there waiting.

Still, I'd hope there's a warning on the box that 5gb of HDD space is required, and it would be nice if some warning were plainly in sight, stating that the initial install could take 25 mins, giving anyone a chance to install it, before they want to play it, rather than sit down all ready, and then be faced with an install, with no prior warning.

Just my 2p. Installing = win Forcing = fail.

Again, cool how Drake's Fortune managed to seemlessly go from one level to the next, while you were playing, with no loading screen. Didn't that cache to the HDD while you were playing? Brilliant that!

V1N.

I am still confused (yet not confused enough to do the maths!!).

I have had games on PS3 with 2gb installs take approx 5 mins. Hence I am baffled why this install takes 25mins for 5gb.

I am sure if I did some maths the BR data transfer rate is not that slow!!!

I suspect whilst it is simultaneously copying the install to the HDD, it is streaming this "story" to the ps3 as well, hence why it takes so long.

I would have just preferred a mandatory install with no storytelling (although I have played the previous DMCs so know the story).

If on average the game takes 3 times less time to load in game on the ps3, I am unsure how it can be a bad thing (unless you own only a 360 I guess, for dual format owners this is win win as it gives us "choice" as to whether we want the 360 or ps3 version based on their differences).

Yea well technically 2x BD is still transfering data at 72mbit/s (about 20x DVD iirc) so it probably isnt a great liability as everyone makes out, not until games fully utilise 25gb with higher levels of compression etc anyway.

So taht means 72/8 = 9 megabytes per sec. 9*60 = 540mb copied a minute. So based on that in 25 mins it would copy 13.5gb!!! Eiterh BR is slower than 72mbit, or the HDD cannot handle 9mb a sec (unlikely) or them streaming the storyline for 25 mins slows down the install (most likely)

Bizarre (I am sure most people don't care about the maths like me anyway!!)

RR7 was a 5gig install if you took the option to do so, took about 5mins. Now way should DMC4 take 20odd - unless the story of the previous DMC games takes that long - the stories are normally lenghy affairs, lol - so maybe it does!

Taken from Blu-ray.com said:
How fast can you read/write data on a Blu-ray disc?

According to the Blu-ray Disc specification, 1x speed is defined as 36Mbps. However, as BD-ROM movies will require a 54Mbps data transfer rate the minimum speed we're expecting to see is 2x (72Mbps). Blu-ray also has the potential for much higher speeds, as a result of the larger numerical aperture (NA) adopted by Blu-ray Disc. The large NA value effectively means that Blu-ray will require less recording power and lower disc rotation speed than DVD and HD-DVD to achieve the same data transfer rate. While the media itself limited the recording speed in the past, the only limiting factor for Blu-ray is the capacity of the hardware. If we assume a maximum disc rotation speed of 10,000 RPM, then 12x at the outer diameter should be possible (about 400Mbps). This is why the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) already has plans to raise the speed to 8x (288Mbps) or more in the future.

Gotta love idiotic statements like these :)

Do you disagree that a certain minority of 360 fans on this forum would be heralding this 25 minutes install and quicker loading times as an advantage if it was on the 360 version only?

NO! Making johnnyfive's quote NOT idiotic!

I download some demo's yes, not like you are going to keep a demo for a year or so like some might do with games, not once has my 20gig been near to being full, so no idea why you assume it has been? I download a demo, play it, delete it, its not a full game.

As I said to me it becomes a problem when more games force it and then you are faced with the choice of HDD upgrade, or deleting a game from your HDD and then having to suffer a 20 minute install if you ever want to have a quick go on it again (and not forgetting having to delete another game to make room for the old one to go back on.)

But if you don't see that as a problem then cool, I am sure others will if that scenario ever appears.

I'm on the fence on this one..
I 'like' the principle of HDD installs for extra performance.. however, I agree with Mr Men, just looking at my HDD space on my PS3, it would mean either a whole load of messing around with removing/re-adding Movies/Music/Demo's and other HDD installed games..

I think keeping game installs to a max of 2Gb seems more sensible, that's a pretty good collection of games you could easily keep installed even on the lowest 40Gb model..
